Everyone else: make another thread to talk about better radars. This thread is STILL about placement not which is better.
Lets not, thats been discussed at length as well, there are a couple threads on it, a quick search should find them.

Well I meant keep it out of this thread...

AvtoLubitel, thanks for the link to that detector test. There is some good info there.
Tread, I'd be more than happy to drive your future car as you check your frequencies on it...for speed calibrations.

Ok I use to be a police officer and the only device that is actually aimed, is Laser. The other types K,Ka,X are not really aimed but placed in the direction cars will be traveling, thats why the Police cars are sitting in various directions. As a rule of thumb the higher up the better chances of picking up the signal. I have a Cobra unit and have it placed above the rear view mirror. It won't stick to the dot matrix, even with the front upper glass tinted, it doesn't hold very well, but it is better. So I took some velcro and velcroed it to the rear view mirror, along with the suction holding the rear. Seems to be working pretty good, and has saved me from several tickets already. Even got buzzed by Laser once.

Just remember kiddies... My Stalker has a hold button for a reason. A cop who is trying to write speeds isn't sitting in the median with his radar blasting hoping that he is going to catch someone. I don't write mustang or vette drivers unless they really deserve it but don't get too over confident in the ability of your Early Ticket Warning Device.

Thanks troopers out there. Never got a ticket I didn't deserve. I'd like to think I deserved all the breaks you guys have given me too...

That said, and placement seems to be the desired topic...

Just below the mirror works good for me. I shortened the power wire to customize the length.

I'd like to make the following observations...I have not mastered the art of going by the sound only. I do use the lights to 'quick filter' the alerts. being below the mirror brings the lights closer to my 'scan'. This shortens response time and keeps the road in view...I can also grab it and ditch it if necessary...I haven't had to yet, but have had some close calls.

I also use the unit in my daily driver to familiarize myself with the 'hot spots' for further filtering.

As for EMP and naval electronic warfare...I once knew a guy who took a magnetron and related circuitry out of a discarded microwave... B)

I'm pretty sure the EMP comment was a joke. I only mentioned EW because people tend to flame opinions unless they are based in some fact (i.e. I am a cop). That is what we do for surface ships...detect and classify radar....of course, it is on a much larger scale. But the priciples are the same, which is why I offered my advice.

inflection is hard to convey in writing, that's why these forums degrade into needless rants all the time...I actually thought both references (EMP and EW) were apropriate and was half-joking about a jammer a friend and I were brainstorming about years ago.
