In VA radar detectors are illegal. Not sure what other states outlawed them too, but my question is: don't radar detectors also emit RF so that the police can tell if you have a radar detector operating?

Radar detectors emit an oscilation frequency that is actually a byproduct of its function. But this is a week signal and not used to actually detect police radar. Since radar detectors as passive.

There are currently 2 types of Radar Detector Dectors.
One is known as VG2. Used by most police forces in North America.
This can be fooled by most radar detectors today. Making them invisible to VG2.

The new Radar Detector Detector, is called Spectre and it's now up to v3.
These are the nasty onces that cannot be fooled by anything legally sold.
Fortunetly they are not widely used. The biggest suporter is Ontario Canada. The US still uses VG2 for the most part. But they are swtiching to Spectre where radar detectors are illegal to use.

Whtmule, what state do you live in? I'm asking because the only state in the country that outlaws radar detectors is Virginia. If you live anywhere else, it's perfectly fine to keep the radar detector in plain view.

My personal reccomendation for a radar detector is the Escort Passport 8500 X50. Mounting is another personal preference, but I find it to work best for me 5 - 7 above the dashboard, mounted in the center of the windshield. A general rule of thumb is to make sure the radar detector is not obstructed by window tint or solid objects.

13 years in law enforcement and only once have I ever stopped someone with a V1. He said "I thought I was safe because there was another car between you and me." That was true but most modern radars show the speed of the closest vehicle and the speed of the fastest vehicle in the group.

So, no radar detector will prevent you from getting a ticket if you don't listen to what it is trying to tell you.

I ordered the Escort Passport 8500 X50 this weekend. After shopping locally I ended up buying from Ebay and saved over $50.

I got my first speeding ticket in over 15 years a couple of weeks ago on the interstate. I just want a little warning.

You can also use the smart cord and power the unit from your vehicle's battery.

I hard wired my Stalker into my dome light and it works great. The power to the dome light actually shuts off completely after like 30 minutes, just in case you leave the light on after you park/exit the car. I can hear my detector power up each time I unlock the door, if it has been sitting for a while, and it is powered all the time while the car is running. I have had it this way for about 3 weeks and have had no issues. I wired it up following this thread:

I see a lot of police on the NJ Turnpike hiding behing overpasses and facing away from the oncoming traffic. That way, when their radar is running, you go past them and have little or no time to react.

Can the Escort 8500 X50 detect a radar if it is behind an overpass and shooting ahead of you and not at you?

Depends. By nature, radar is very reflective. If it shot forward, and bounched back off a car or sign, then yes, you can detect it.

This is why a high end detector, such as and X50, V1, or bel vector is much more useful. If you look at radar tests, the cobra's uniden, radio shack brands, ect don't have the same sensativity, and won't pick up these weak reflected signals.
