radar detector
ok guys, i am considering a escort Solo S2 or a 9500i on ebay the S2 is going for $260 and the 9500i is going for $445 direct from escort, which is better and would it be better for me to go with the 9500i or go simple and get the S2

I just got a 9500i. Bought it direct. It is the best Radar Dector I have ever owned. I am amazed at its performance thus far. I have owned ALOT of detectors.
Buy it Direct and get the 2 year extended warranty for te extra 30.00.
If you want the best your gonna have to pay.

The 9500i >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> V1.
I *heard* the radar detection performance and antenna on the 9500i is the same as the latest 8500 x50, but the 9500i contains much more like GPS and selective muting to ignore grocery store radar signals.

The V1 was one of the best up until recently due to the Escort Passport 9500i. The V1 does not have anything remotely related to GPS or selective muting (heck, it doesn't even have auto mute). Read up on the Passport 9500i because it is quite new (released within the past 2 months). The V1 will have a LOT of catching up to do.

Funny reading this topic, I just gave a ticket to a guy with a radar detector. 84 in a 70, and that was being generous. When I hit the instant on, he was already slowing down from about 87, and by the time I hit the lock button, it was 84. I would bet he was doing 90+ before I got him. I gave him a break on his registration though, it was a brand new Fusion and his temp tags expired 3 weeks ago. I complemented him on his car, and almost asked him what kind of detector it was but didn't. The funny thing is I would have never sat out on the interstate if another motorist wouldn't have called in on the car doing 95+ about 10 minutes earlier. Ah well, if you wanna play gotta be prepared to pay right?

Do not waste your money on cordless radar detectors.
The range and detection is less then ones powered by a cord and as the battery gets weak the range and detection gets worse.
As for the new 9500i I would not buy one at this time.
There have been reported problems with the GPS failing and not getting the information it needs if the cloud cover is really heavy.
Also there is some firmware issues that still need to be dealt with.
If Escort gets it worked out it could be a great radar detector.
Theedge67 has a point, Instant on is deadly and there is nothing you can do about that.
The best you can hope for is to have a car in front of you that gets hit with radar before your car does.
It is truly a cat and mouse game.

I used my new 9500i during the most recent snowstorm which had a ton of cloud cover and it did not affect the GPS whatsoever. In fact my detector is mounted at the top of my windshield which actually keeps the detector under the roof line of the car and the GPS signal locks within 2 minutes of pulling out of my garage.
