Racing....At what RPM do you shift??

Alright. Question for you manual owners: When dragging, at what RPM's should you shift from 1st to 2nd?? And from 2nd to 3rd??

At what RPM's is the Mustang's performance maximixed?? I have a feeling that when I race I tend to stay in 1st alittle too long.

Any pointers would be nice...

Are you running the stock setup or are you running new tunes? If stock I would shift at 6100 revs from 1-2 and 2-3. If you have 410's shift 3-4 a bit sooner. If you are running tunes with an increased rev limit then you want to be shifting at about 6500 - 6600 revs for 1-2 and 2-3 and 6300 for 3-4 if you have gears that make it necessary to shift into fourth. Also for max performance practice powershifting 1-2 and 2-3. These cars are almost impossible to power shift 3-4 but a good speed shift works well. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately these manual transmissions are wide ratio. What that means is the output torque between gears never overlaps (it literally drops massive output torque between shifts) , which means you have to shift at what RPM you feel comfortable is your max RPM in all gears ... be that 6100 or 6600 RPM (the deciding factor would be where the torque curve starts to fall on its face. I would agree with David that if you are running 4.10 gears or higher, you won't carry 1st gear to max RPM or you will likely over rev the engine.

I actually get out of first a little faster at about 6100 and run 2nd up to about 6600(about 72mph or so). I definitely want to get an aluminum driveshaft though.

Yeah, I noticed this time out at the track that I was taking 1st to about 6500 and my times were slower, and that was dropping me at about 4k in 2nd. I think I'll try shifting at 6k or 6100 next time.
