No kidding! Do you live near a sand-blaster?

I can't believe with all the enviromental test that Ford did they missed the paint not flaking off.

There haven't been any high winds recentley. There has been an abnormally large amount of rainfall in the last 2 weeks. All these chips come from just daily road driving though. Even if we did have a high wind advisory, it couldn't be anything that driving at 60-70 mph wouldn't cause. I would understand if the paint was scratched from the sand a debris in the wind, but not the size chips I have and not right down to the steel.

Hmmm...time to cash in on that warranty.

New paint job? That's just obscene for "normal" conditions.

I hope my problem doesn't get to that extent! But I have a bad feeling that it might. That pattern of flakes looks similar too mine, only mine is isolated to only a couple of areas, so far!

Take it in immediately! That is an open and shut case IMO, and I bet it looks even worse in person.

Best wishes man and try not to let it get you down! B)

Holy Schneikes...
And here I was disgruntled over a whole lotta orange peel on my hood.

Get thee to the car dealer immediately.

Wow there is no way in heck that this is normal. My 2000 that has been a daily driver for four years has 6-7 small chips from rocks and thats it. What you have there could be expected if you drove behind a gravel truck for 2 months straight while its spewing gravel on the road. Take it back right away. That has to be a warranty issue.

my 96 doesn't have nearly that many chips. and most of the ones i have are where the hood curves down the most. I have been suprised that the paint is as nice as it is. the only new chips i get i know about before i see them, they're the kind that you can here inside the cabin. Definately get it looked at, i have driven out to palm springs, vegas, and palm desert plenty of times and never had any issues like what your dealing with.

WOW!

Yeah I've driven that area many times and a couple of times through a sandstorm...never anything like that.

To the dealer it goes!

FORD AND THEIR BLACK PAINT!!!! ERRRRR!!!!! I have a 98.5 Contour SE Sport that has the worst paint.....it rivals GM and their white that they had for a few years that came right off.....it just happens that Ford had a tainted batch of primer/paint for the black for the 98 model year......Ford says that was the only year it happened, and that it happened at the Kansas City Assembly plant. Anyway, I am VERY interested in a 05, but the paint on that car looks EXACTLY like what my car has had for several years....it seems like the same problem. I went to my dealer with page afer page of people that had 98 Contours with the same problem and the dealer did the typical...."well, we never heard of this problem, so we can't help you..." Sheezs!!! I wish you the best of luck and they better do something....your car is just way too new for this crap! I love Ford, but they need to learn how to paint!!!

Sorry for the length....

My 2000 Ranger is black and it's paint is still in good shape. The front bumper has some chips, but I put 50-60k miles driving to and from college so I figure it is normal wear and tear.

As black is a very popular color for the new Mustang and we have not heard of a lot of people with awful paint I would think that this is a relatively isolated problem. And, since somenoyd else mentioned that they think they too have this problem, but their color is not black, it indeed sounds like a prep problem.

IMO, sounds like you may have incurred that damage from your cross country drive with dirt, rocks, etc flying in the air. Especially when you are tailing a big rig. I am so sorry, but like mentioned many times before....TAKE IT TO THE DEALER.

So your out at "the stumps", huh? I've got a buddy that's been at China Lake for about 2 years now. Seems his Jeep and his Chebby Trailblazer that were nice and shiny leaving Florida now have what he called a "semi-flat" finish.
I don't guess I'll have to worry much about sand, but the highways here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area have probably the biggest amount of road debris on the continent.

I would demand a repaint - there's no other fix for this.

I have a black '05 on order, built week of Jan. 24 - I'm seriously thinking of changing colors now after your horror story - I wish you well with the fix.

If I change colors now would it mess up my build date?

Wow, that is really bad. I have some paint chips on my Patriot (i.e. dark) Blue 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which is one reason that this is my first and last dark colored vehicle.

But what you have is worse than anything I have seen before. Back to the dealer you go, and stand firm---this is very abnormal, regardless of your cross country drive.

Hang tough, and keep us posted.

Something not right here. No way should paint chip like that.. If ford gets enough complaints could their be a recall. It has happened before.
