Ping Question

I have a question and was wondering if anyone has a possible answer. I have been getting a weird pinging noise that last for about 1 second right after letting the clutch out between the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. It sounds like spark nock but only does right it after shifting. I have tried going into too high of a gear a flooring it to see if it pings when bogged but it doesn't. It only does it under medium to hard acceleration right after shifting and does not do it all the time. It is very random but very common, if that makes sense. It randomly does it in the cool mornings and the hot afternoons. I have tried several different brands and octanes of gas with no change. I am a little hesitant to take it to the dealer in fear that it might be clutch related, which isn't covered under warranty and I can't afford at the moment. The car is stock with no mechanical changes whatsoever and I haven't drove it overly hard. It has 15K miles on it and have had all maintenance performed on time. Can anything in a clutch sound like spark nock? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mine was pinging a bit sometimes under hard acceleration up hill...I switched to mid-grade and haven't heard it since. Maybe give a tank of premium a try and see if there is any change.

Time to buy a hand-held tuner (much cheaper than a new clutch) and dial back the timing and/or bump the fuel, or get a custom tune. If that's not the problem and you end up needing a new clutch (or anything else) at least you have the tuner to perk up the car and allow for future mods (who doesn't want that!).

Thanks for the input. I have tried different octanes of gas with no change. I got it to do it today without shifting so no I'm not too worried about it being the clutch. I'm not too mechanically inclined but if I can get it to do it when not shifting then I wouldn't think that would be it. I've been seriously thinking about a tuner/CAI so maybe this is a sign that it is time to do it!!

I had the EXACT same thing with my 06 GT. I bought an intake and tune and have not heard it since. I would guess the stock tune has an issue. I have since put headers on and had it custom tuned. Still have not heard it again.

Have the same occasionally, but very slight @ low rpm. Dealer has not upgrade or fix, but to try a higher octane gas....

I have the Bamachips 91 octane race tune, and I have started having a slight ping since I switched gas stations. I ran Shell 92 octane both before and after I switched to getting gas at a Shell station that was a few cents cheaper. I think the gas at the cheaper station might be have water in it or is lower octane than marked.

I ran my tank nearly to empty and went back to the Shell station that I normally would buy from and filled up with 92 octane this morning. I suspect the ping will go away.

I have a 08 GT Auto BONE STOCK and also noticed the pinging noise on upshifts. 1-2 and 2-3. 3-4 thou RPM band. I changed to 93 Chevron and still same noise. I am wondering if this is not a pinging noise we are hearing. 3-5 thou WOT not a single ping. I have done WOT tests in 90+ heat and early morn 75 degree weather.. Car only has 1400 miles on it so I dont get into to it all the way.

with the engine off I was messing with the back of the Intake Manifold and found the Charge Motion plate acuator.. I could open and close them and it was a loud click. I am wondering if that is what I am hearing? Any Ideas?

I have also tried different brands/octanes/temperatures to no avail. I think I am going to try the tune to see what happens. It would be nice to know for sure before I buy though since I chance the warranty by going with CAI. Since it seems that automatics do it too then I am even more sure it isn't clutch related.

Yep, I have the EXACT same thing going on in my bone stock 2008 manual trans. GT. It just started around 9,500 miles (a few weeks ago). It can be occasionally duplicated by putting the engine under load at low RPMs. While rolling in 2nd gear at about 5-10 mph, step on the brake with your left foot and give it some gas.

I've been running nothing but Chevron 87. Now that I think about it, it started right after they switched to the summer blend gasoline around here. Not sure if it is related, but might be worth checking into. I'm going to try another brand and possibly another grade on the next tank, but if it keeps it up I'll take it in to the dealer in a few weeks. I really don't want to run premium in this thing with the stock tune.

I got the same ping. I didn't notice mine till after I put on a CAI.
I think it is something else like the Charge motion plates mention earlier.

Update from my previous post, I filled up with a fresh full tank of Shell 92 octane from the gas station I normally buy from, and the pinging under WOT has gone away. I confirmed it by smoking an Acura TL.

So be aware that bad gas can cause pinging as well, and gas quality can vary from station to station even when you buy the same brand/grade of gas.

I've noticed the same thing with my car happening sporadically. I can understand pinging happening at WOT but not at 3000 rpm with premium gas. I have a CAI with tunes and have noticed this same thing with both 87 and 93 octane fuel. But like I had said before, it doesn't happen all of the time....weird

Could it be that with the price of oil so high, quality is coming down?? I'm using 98octane gas with the engine tuned to 95octane and I get zero ping. I also believe that the charge motion plates might be the source of the confusion, can anyone with CMDP chime in?
