did someone say J-turns?
Actually, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the J-turn was where you have the car in reverse, and you crank the wheel, do a 180, then put it in 1st and continue moving the same direction you were already going.

Whenever I've done those I never needed the parking brake, but maybe I'm confusing the meaning of J-turn. [/b][/quote]
dat be it shift into first WHILE spinning if you're really slick B)

From a driving technique manual

J Turn, reverse 180:
1. stop vehicle immediately (skidding is likely)
2. reverse full speed
3. disengage clutch
4. engage emergency brake simultaneously w/ step #5.
5. w/ left hand, turn steering wheel from 12 o'clock position to 6 o'clock (clockwise for left j-turn, counter-clockwise for right j-turn)
6. before complete 180 rotation, return steering position to 12 o'clock and release the parking brake. (at 90 degrees)
7. shift into first and engage clutch upon reaching full 180 and accelerate away from danger.
Bringing up the E-brake is what causes the car to snap around in conjunction with turning the steering wheel

I think I'm the one who started the gripe about the parking break - at least I got teased about it enough. I think thirty people pointed out the break isn't up when you're driving. I knew the funny burning smell was coming from somewhere! lol

I don't know about you, but I occasionally reach for something in the glove box or on the passenger side floor. If the break were engaged and you did this, you'd give yourself major surgery.

But for the record, I brought it up once and will never do so again. :hiding:

Eh. E-brake looks fine to me. I like the pull out version on my '66, but, with newer cockpit setups, I'm sure I'd be banging my knee on it if I got in and it was pulled. I do miss the clean look, tho. I have never heard of this use of the parking brake in normal driving situations (besides parking or emergencies...never heard of a "help-my-slow-shifting-rump-get-rolling-the-right-way-on-a-hill brake" ). Granted, I live in the topographic doldrums of the upper midwest, but I've started on my fair share of hills in various stickshifts with no problems to speak of...but if it will help some shmuck in a Chevette avoid rolling into the front of my '05 Mustang, I'm all for it!

Damian.

Oh...that Renault's e-brake is friggin sweet, by the way!!

Interesting. I've never tried that technique, but I've had pretty good succes with the method I described. I can definitely see (physics-wise) how the instructions you've posted would work, I guess I've just never tried it.

I suppose it would snap the front end around quicker. I'm not entirely sure my reflexes are quick enough to pull the brake and disengage it that quickly.

Food for thought.

And yeah, Kevin, I did get pretty good at popping into first while spinning. Once I get my 05 it will be time to practice that manuever again!

LOL. No worries. Its on a lot of people's mind. Some of us think its a minor thing that can be fixed if needed, others are still a bit peeved that it wasn't done right from the drawing board.....either way, its interesting discussion.

If people didn't want to talk about it, it would be on page 2.

No problem. B) Actually I just wondered what it was all about.

That's a really good point. I never thought about getting stabbed while reaching over to the glove box. Guess I'll have to keep from getting pulled over

Maybe they'll make some replacements but what would they be like?.... Just shorter? What would your ideal brake replacement for the 05 car look like?

I've never need the e-brake for that

Everytime I have a set of tires ready for replacing, I go out in a large old parking lot and make sure I got every penny out of them

Is that a parking brake or are you happy to see her?

Tough to play rally car driver in the snow with a foot actuated parking brake!

i think the e-brake is horibly ugly, its on the wrong side i perfer it on the right for more easier drifts. It looks ugly cause its not straight its like straight about a 2 inchs then curves left an inch then straight again.... kinda ugly to me, and it looks like if u pik it up while trying to bust a manuver or reach for the shifter it would interfere... just my opinion, i would like it to be more like the rx8 e-brake.

At least I won't forget to disengage the e brake. I usually end up going down the road till I hear bing-bing-bing, thinking now what the heck is that....oops e brake still on.
