Painting Cam Covers Question

I have a 2007 GT in Windveil Blue. I got a can of WVB made up at my local paint shop, and I am wondering can I use it to paint the cam covers, even though it is not high temp paint. can I prime the covers first with high temp primer from DupliColor, and then use this enamel paint, and then clear with high temp clear? Will that protect the paint from the engine heat?

I would really like to match the cam covers to the body color, but if not, i can always paint them silver, as I can get that in high temp from Duplicolor.

Sean

I painted mine with Standard Base and Clear and they held up great for about a year, and then they started to lift. So I am going to try again on another set with acrylic enamel, am hoping this will last longer. If you end up going silver you might as well powder coat them, or order them pre-coated from FRPP.

If its not high temp paint, don't count on it lasting long.

I say get them powdercoated, but its all up to you and your budget.

I found a local powercoater who can do it for around $70. I am going there tomorrow to look at the colours hee has, and see what comes close to the Windveil blue.

I did that paint scheme back in early 05 and its still fine, but ours is for show. I did a total cast sanding and fill of any deflects that was time consuming. Powercoat would be better if its used as a daily, as the paint will still soften when hot and anything rubbing will scar them. Although there is little of that. Can't say if heavy road dirt would imbed in the warm paint.

Ended up changing my mind. Again!

I brought the covers to my paint guy, and he painted them Windveil Blue, to match the body. They came out great.

I will post some pics as soon as I get some daytime shots of them.

How does that wrinkle finish paint from Krylon hold up against the heat?

Maybe George will respond, I haven't driven mine since painting the covers. Time will tell I guess. I'm not taking them off again until I get those purty FRPP chrome-like covers.

HEAT is you friend when doing these covers with wrinkle paint.

This is what I did.

after degreasing and cleaning the covers I put them in the oven(just one at a time) heated them up till they were almost to hot to handle, no need to get crazy with the heat.

took them outside and sprayed them with a thick coat while hot.

now as they were drying I used a heat gun on the still wet paint to insure even wrinkle finish.

I have had them on now for all of summer and about 1500 miles with no change. Still looks good!
