Older guys, is this the newest car you will get??

I 'm starting to think this '07 may be the newest car I ever own. It isn't because I can't afford to get a newer one, it is because I am disgusted with idiot lights, sensors, cylinder deactivation in some models, plus I won't even consider a NAV screen. I really enjoy my Mustang but I may be pushing the envelope in 'newness'. I don't want a Chinese 6 speed in any car (whenever those came out) and I don't need cars telling me how to park or when a service is due or when my tires are low, or that I should immediately take my car to a dealer when an 'idiot' light comes on. While I do want HP and handling, I'm thinking the 90's cars seem to be the best bet for this without all the idiotic contraptions. I owned many 90's cars and overall they were fine cars. 300 HP is plenty. I don't need 400+ HP which is mostly for the additional weight anyway. I read so many posts about so much aggravation too. I think of the simplicity of my '87 SS and the performance of my '01 T/A (which technically is a '98 with the same body and LS1). No electronic aggravation. With many ultra low mileage cars available from the 90's (some owners just put them away) I think that is the route I am going with in the future. Basically 'new' 90's Mustangs and GM F-bodies can be had for half the price of a new car. After fluid changes and new tires, these 90's cars are basically new and will last for years and years without the lights, screens and idiocy. Anyone have similar feelings?

I'm 62 and just retired in April. During my working life I always had a new company car every few years, and when my job changed, I leased cars every 3 years. I still am leasing a '12 Fusion V6, and my new Mustang is the toy. It's a Premium GT 'vert with a stick, no electronics and no back up camera. It has all the creature comforts I would have gotten in a daily driver, plus just enough tech stuff that I'm willing to accept and use.

It's unlikely I'll be able to take the plunge on another muscle car ever again, so I hope to live until at least 82 so I can get historic tags for my by then, very old school Mustang. I think this last year of the S197's is the perfect blend of performance and looks, with the technology (or lack of) that I prefer in mine.

My dilemma will be replacing my daily driver next April. Used? Leased? Truck? Beater? Econobox? Whatever I get it needs to be reliable and capable of winter use while the Mustang stays snug in the garage.

I'll be crossing that proverbial bridge when I get there.

Tom

I couldn't agree more. I don't want a car that thinks for me. I'm 54 and my daily driver is an 08 GT. I just don't want all the bells and whistles, along with the "mother may I" options. My next car will most likely be a low mileage car from the late 90's or early 2000's.

I know how to check the tire pressure in my freaking tires and don't want my car to monitor it.

I am going to be 60 in a few months and really am high tech'ed out. Hell, just to make a call on my "smarter than me" phone can be a PITA if I bump the wrong button. Some of the things like all the complex features in the newer cars are a bit more than necessary, IMHO.
I will try to semi retire next year and move from Indiana to our Tennessee home and will not be buying any more new cars like I have in the past. Will not be able to afford to. However I have my 2007 GT/CS, my 2010 F-150, my 2012 Motorcycle, and my wife has a 2013 Edge. All low mileage! They all have nice features, however none of them have the extra electronics packages. Plus, I like to drive and pay attention when I do. I too don't need a car to tell me how to drive.
Now on the flip side of this, maybe some of the idiots texting while driving down the road need the new features to keep them safe, and us safe from them. I drive a lot of miles for my company and I have more than once been almost hit by idiots that have crossed over in my lane because driving got in the way of them texting!
With all the high tech features, we need a feature on the cell phones that once a person gets behind the wheel, texting is disabled. And I know they have the ability to implement that now, but why risk sales for just a few accidents & deaths? (Sorry, got on a roll here).
So, back to topic, I personally don't need all the high tech electronics in my car either and if I can find I need another vehicle, I too will look for a low mileage vehicle that has been taken care of going forward. My day of buying brand new vehicles is now a thing of the past! (I want to retire someday!)
That 707 HP Challenger Hellcat looks kinda nice though...LOL!!!!

...plus it costs $$ to fix it. I forgot what I had to pay for 4 new ones when the bands broke but I bet it was an extra $100 at least. What a waste!

Phil R, you make great points about the new technology saving us from those that text and drive. We'll drive the 'older' rides and they can have all the technology which they obviously need.

Who needs navigation? Being retired allows for a lot of free time to get lost and enjoy the drive.

I spent a career in information technology so although I am 74 I am not put off by new technology. The gadgets that are useful to me I use and the others I ignore. I didn't get a nav system in my new Mustang because of the cost. I have a 7" tablet with an excellent nav system that was very inexpensive, has free lifetime map and POI updates, and gives me turn-by-turn instructions in Italian. I appreciate having hands-free calling with the bluetooth connection between my phone and my Mustang's Sync system. And it's convenient having some 300 albums on a thumb drive and the ability to select what I want to hear using voice commands.

Hi Tom,
Show off!!! Being 74 and enjoying retired life and I have to wait a bit yet! Actually, I am not "put off" by new technology. I personally just don't think all of new technology is necessary in cars, for me anyway. I like to be one with my car and I love to drive. I like to enjoy the drive, maybe have the radio on or normally just listen to that sweet exhaust note and look where I am going. And notice the scenery as well.
Neither approach is wrong, the only thing is all the phone calls, Sync or not, texting, and the other distractions that other drivers do concern me because they do not seem to concentrate on their driving.
Regards,
Phil

I think it's pretty juvenile to dismiss some new technology. I'm only 27, and I hate "new" cars just as much as you more seasoned guys - they're "throwaway" cars to me. That said, I ordered the Electronics Package on my car because a) I liked how the dash looked better; b) it gave me dual zone climate control so my fiancée can be warm while I'm cool; c) it gave me HD radio; d) I ordered the backup cam (which admittedly is unnecessary, but a nice feature to supplement my mirrors and looking over my shoulder) and it looks better on the full screen.

I love driving with the map up, as the GPS tracks the car (especially at night). It reminds me of radar on a plane or ship. I also love my different color gauges. I dim the gauges and screen at night, to really feel connected to the car - just me and pedals/shifter, with the Glass Roof canopy over my head.

I have a smart phone that is way smarter than I yam. It's all I need in the way of tech lol
As far as newer cars I suppose there will always be a newer car I want. Lately its been
Aston Martin or the Jag type f. type cars. Bottom line if I had the cash I would get a newer car and probably just drive it. I actually can't stand the 15 buttons on the steering wheel ...hey its a sports car, your suppose to drive them not tinker with all the gadgets. Sports car and creature comforts shouldn't inter mingle to much. I too like how simple of a car my 06 is for lack of a better term. 4 buttons on the wheel and a button for traction control. Oh and you only have to push the button once to turn it off.

I hear you guys, but I use my Mustang as a daily driver, a road trip car, and I run her in autocross. So the gadgets I use depend on how I am driving the car.
When I am running autocross I turn off traction control and use the SelectShift button and everything else is off. I am not aware of the buttons on the steering wheel or anything else but the cones that outline the course.
The other gadgets and controls get used as I need them when tooling around town or out on the road.
As to people talking on hand-held phones and/or texting while driving, I would love to see someone yank them out of the car and slap them around. However, I assume they are too stupid to learn anything from such an experience.

with Glen. New is cool but I like that my car is simple and virtually low tech. I'm happy it doesn't have tire pressure sensors. I could appreciate a backup cam. That would be helpful with the side louvers. Other than that my cell phone has all other options I need including navigation.

Cell phone and driving is a big no with me too. Mine usually goes in the console or the glove compartment while I'm driving.

I agree, still too many buttons on the wheel. I do use the D-pad a lot though, switching back and forth between fuel economy and the Gauge Mode which just has a pony and miles to empty.

I love that Porsche offers a "sport steering wheel" which has zero buttons except for a horn. Idk where they relocate all the buttons, but it looks amazing!

We forgot to listen to the rear. Although nothing stood out as we were dodging freeway moles.

Haha I didn't notice! And yeah I thought of that just as I was driving away and it started howling. It doesn't do it when I'm stretching out its legs, only when cruising in 6th.
