Oil change timeframe for a pleasure car

Well I just noticed that my daily needs it's 5,000 mile checkup and it got me thinking when I should take my Stang in. Now the reason I ask this question is because of the way the Stang in driven. Now it's a year and a half old (got it august of 05) and it currently has just under.....be prepared to yell at me......2,000 miles on it.

Now that being the case, and I recently got my "10,000 mile sevice notice" (LOL) from Ford. When do you think a good oil change interval would be? Should I still stick with 5,000? more or less?

Thanks,

05blackV6

I got my mustang in June 05 and it only has about 3400 miles on it. Mine also is not a daily driver. I generally take it to my dealer for an oil change every six months. I do check the oil when I wash the car to ensure it looks clean. I don't believe the "change your oil every three months" statement since I only put about 700 miles on it in three months. Just my opinion.

I will probably take it to my dealer too. I'm not sure. I mean yes it isn't used alot, but by the same token, I would think it should not stand the same for too long without a lot of action right? I actually don't know how to oil change myself, so I would need the dealer anyway.

It's simple if you've done it before and have the right tools, place to do it, and can access to the bottom of the car, but if you've encountered a drain plug or oil filter that was tightened too tight, it can turn into much more than you bargained for. If you change it yourself, you don't have to worry about someone overtightening the drain plug and stripping the threads, or over filling.

I've had way too many negative experiences with various dealer oil changes on multiple cars over the years, so I won't let them touch my car.

Oil doesn't stay good for very long, its the same as gasoline. I change mine approximately every 3 months no matter how much I drive. It's also a warranty thing. 3mo. 5,000 according to the owners manual. Oil will gum up evntually, Ihave no idea the time frame but it will

I asked the Mobil 1 Tech the same question since my annual mileage is way below 3k a year.

Was told to change it out once a year, regardless of the miles.

I have had a Mustang or Corvette for 20 years that I only drive 1000 - 3000 per year. I change the oil once a year with Mobil One.

I currently have just under 8,700 miles on my car. Have had it since January 30th, but didn't really start driving it till the snow was gone (around late February). Its a weekend car show car. I have a mileage limit for insurance (8,500 per year) so I change my oil around 4,000 miles, or 2 times a year. After I get to 12,000 miles, I'm changing over to Mobil 1, and then I'll go on the 1 year cycle.

I have several vehicles which are hardly used and have been trying to figure this one out for years.

I usually go six to nine months on cars that are practically not used. To me, changing oil every three months (after only a couple of hundred miles) is a bit overkill.

I think the "3 month" interval was invented by Jiffy Lube.

The 3 month interval was designed to apply to cars that are driven every day, but don't make it to 3000 miles in 3 months. Those cars would be driving primarily city type driving, with lots of short trips. Even still, the old "3000/3month" saying was developed DECADES ago. LEADED GAS WAS STILL AROUND!!! Think of how much cleaner todays engines run, along with the major improvements in todays oils, namely synthetics!

My deal is to use Ford Motorcraft oil and filter every 5,000 miles or 12 months, at my current rate I'll be at 12 months before 5k miles. (4 months ownership = 800 miles).

I've got 8300 miles and bought it in sept 05. I've been getting it changed every 6 months by a mechanic who has a small business and is a car freak so I know there are no problems when I take it there. I think I will start using Mobil 1 and just get it changed once a year though

I have about 8,300 on mine. Have had it changed 3 times; at the 3 month or 3000 deal. I bought it in June 06; but have 2 distance drives. One to Great Lakes, Il. from Pottsville, Pa. & one to Norfolk, Va. from Pottsville. Having free oil changes at my Dealership, I figure I might as well use them...Once I hit 12,000; I plan on either Mobil 1 or something similar.

I was taught to just pull out the dipstick and look at it.
(I do it everytime I fill-up with gas.)
If the oil is still that nice "golden" color, and you're under the recommended mileage, you should be good to go.
I'm another one of the low mileage guys.
Got my baby in October of '05 and we're just coming up on the 10K mark. (Yes, I had it changed at 5K )
