Oil Change mess

I decided to change the oil in my '08 today. All was fine until I unscrewed the filter. The oil on the filter caused me to lose control of it and it rolled onto the plastic tray on the core support.

Oil everywhere. And it got inside the core support. It will probably drip for a month. Ugh! :(

Taco Bill's ziplock around the filter trick FTW!!! :nice:

Now you tell me.

That is a great idea.

Yeah I never thought of it and had heard that some have a mess removing the filter on the 4.6 & 5.0. So when I saw that idea I thought it was pretty good. Worked great. :nice:

I usally stuff a piece of carboard up there to divert the oil into the pan. better luck next time.

And my son was just telling his friends how much I know about cars and how many I've built over the years. LOL!!!

It just shows that no matter how much experience you have there is always something to learn or a better way of doing things.

Now I need to go out and drive really fast to get the oil out of the core support! :rofl2:

Ziplock on the filter... Duh, why didn't I think of that :)

Great idea! I had always put tinfoil to funnel oil away from everything, but the bag is a lot neater for sure!

Our ford/new holland mower has a 3 cyl diesel, the filter mounts sideways above the fuel injection pump, it is the absolute messiest thing I've ever changed oil in as far as going all over- and being diesel it's filthy to boot...I punch it with a screwdriver, let the filter drain overnight, but it still makes a mess when you take it off- anyone got any more tricks for sideways filters? It's getting a remote filter next oil change, it's that much of a PITA...

I take an old 2 liter bottle of soda and cut out the bottom and some of the side so it looks like scoop. all the oil and filter go into the bottle and then I just unscrew the cap and empty it into my drain pan. No muss no fuss!! Don't have a pic but you get the idea!
