Oil analysis - high iron

For the first time I decided to use Blackstone labs to analyze my oil and they stated the iron content was fairly high and might be concerning.

My 07 GT has some pretty high mileage (129k) and runs well. What should i be looking into regarding the iron content? Blackstone suggests it could be from cylinders, I guess they mean the walls?

Attached is a copy of my oil analysis

Welcome aboard!

First thought was 'don't worry about it, it'll blow up and then you'll know', because honestly it could be literally anything causing that high iron.

Then I had a second thought, which is usually dangerous, but there it is.

Take the valve covers off and inspect the cam shafts. You don't need to remove the caps or the followers, just look at the lobes. What you're looking for is the lobes to be nice and consistently smooth across all of them. Take a fingernail and run it sideways across the cam lobes. You shouldn't have any nicks or roughness/scoring going on. If it doesn't smoothly run across you have a problem, and that's likely where the iron's coming from, the cam lobe and probably the follower it's running.

This also indicates you could have an oiling issue, which is likely the oil pump, but not absolutely. Could also be a clogged oil pickup. You might want to put an oil pressure gauge on the car and see where it is.

Past that... not much you can do without yankin' the motor or at least the heads to have a good look. Could be rings, could be the walls of the cylinder, could be the crank bearings, could be the oil pump itself. All kinds of nifty items that pretty much mean a teardown. These things have plastic guides for the chain, so that's not gonna be it, but the chains/sprockets could be themselves causing it...

To that end... this is why I don't get oil samples analyzed. Just more worry for things I can't really control. Either the engine makes it or it don't, I've done my part in keepin' it runnin', but if it fails, well... darn. Best I don't have the anxiety of 'high iron' or something like that to boot.

For what my thoughts are worth on it. I hope it helps in some way. Good luck, and please, if you have info regarding, don't be shy! Post it up.
