I have 31000 miles on 2005 and just noticed a couple of weeks ago.
mine looks like a small cut about 3/4 inch long.
are the replacing any top prior to the tsb or is it hard to get them to act on it?
Thanks

I also checked my top today, and sure enough there was a little tear on the drivers side. Off to the dealer I go.

Mine was built in January 2007, however I'm still gonna check often! Thanks for the heads up!

Well I went out and looked. Sure enough I have some slight wear marks in the trouble spots. Even though my baby is 2.1 years old, I seldom put the top down more than twice a week in the summer. Last spring (2006) was as hot as summer. Heck, I hardly even drive it anymore since my street got dug up for reconstruction back in March.

Do you think I should take it in anyway even though it does not have holes, just wear spots?

I would definitely bring it in... it will eventually wear through. I just brought mine in yesterday (07' GT/CS) and they took some pictures. The dealer said they need to first send to Ford to get authorization. Looking forward to getting mine replaced.

Thanks to the original person for the heads up.

Has anyone taken advantage of getting their top replaced yet? I ask, because I am going to take my car in for the same issue, and want to pay the extra amount for the cloth top. The dealership said that they can not do that, per FORD. They said even though it makes perfect sense, Ford will only replace a vinyl top with a vinyl top. Has anyone been able to pay extra to get the cloth top?

No surprise that Ford is constantly in the red

Thank you!

I've been searching the forums for weeks now looking for info on this. I noticed a very small tear in same spot on mine about a month ago and was going to show dealer at next maintenance. I have an '05 with ~17K miles, but I cycle the top up/down about 5 times a week.
I'm actually on my 3rd top that is only ~18 months old. The rear window started separating on the original top after a few months & the 2nd top broke 6 months later when a Z-fold joint sheared.

Thanks again for the info.

Mine is at 30,000 miles. I noticed the little teenyhole about 45 to 60 days ago. I'll be at the dealer (finally) in the next couple of weeks.

If it isn't raining and the temp is between 60º and 90º, the top is down, so it gets a LOT of action from April through November. I always put the top back up when she's parked (except in the garage) so there's plenty of cycles on it.

Well, my luck finally ran out.

I just got the tear in the IDENTICAL place as the OP

The one good thing: maybe this will fix my squeaky top. Also, if possible, I may decide to get the cloth top (but I'm unsure about that one).

Let's just hope that my dealer recognizes this as a known problem. I have a feeling that they will, as they've been very good with helping me with issues on other vehicles.

Folks, even with more detailed photos clearly showing the chafing from the underside of the top and the failing straps, they are still denying my claim that my top damage fits the TSB.

Even though my damage exactly matches Adam8G's top, they're saying no. Any ideas?

Fight this all the way. If they are still being arseholes take you car to another dealer. Afterwards contact the BBB and lodge a complaint against them. I had the same damage as Adam8G and it was fixed without problems. When Adam8g posted asking about his problem I recognized it and sent him the TSB and he had no issue getting it fixed either. This is unacceptable and you shouldn't stand for it.

GOD CARES ABOUT MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE OWNERS!

I am not kidding.

After two submissions and two denials, my TSB request has been approved and my top will be replaced.

The service manager at the dealer kept following up. They take digital images of TSB-related items and send them up. They are then approved or denied. He made more phone calls. Apparently there's a supervisor that tends exclusively to Mustang TSB's. He spoke with my service writer, took a look at the digital images, and basically said, "Yes, that's a clear case. He gets a new top."

A special thanks to Adam8G - your photo documentation impressed the service writer and was a key element in him following up.

So don't give up after one try. Do some research and be insistent but polite.

I'll have a replacement top in just a few weeks!

Sorry you had those issues. That is honestly one of the main reasons that I try bringing my car to the dealer here in NC rather than VA.

When this TSB came out I checked my vert., it was built in Dec of '06. The problem seems to be a weld seam on one of the struts and Ford's fix is to put some tape along that strut. My '07 had the tape already installed and so far there has been no wear on my cloth top.

What causes the tear?

What causes the abrasion and tear, having the top in the up position, the process of raising and lowering the top or having the top in the down position?

It sounds like part of the metal frame is rubbing the vinyl, but when does the contact occur?

It appears to get either pinched or pulled inward, at some time other than when it's in the up position. I don't know if it's the actual process of raising/lowering or while in the down position
