New Snow tires

Hi all - I recently picked up a new set of wheels for the summer and now I'm shopping for a set of winter tires to go on my stock 17" bullets. The Chicago winter was not kind to my Pirelli stockers last year, and I'm pretty excited about having decent traction in the snow this year.

Tire rack recommended a 235/55-17 tire. Is that the only size I can go with on the stock GT 17" bullets? The selection is pretty limited in that size, so I was wondering if I could go with a different size.

The one's I'm looking at -
Dunlop winter sport M3 - pretty expensive at $170

or

Goodyear Ultra grip GW3, more reasonable at $130.

Anyone have any experience with these tires?

The key to having a "great" snow tire is a narrow tire with a tall sidewall. So the 235/55 is perfect or even go a little narrower. You do not want to go with a wide tire in the snow. I personally like the Michellin X-Ice. Those tires have always been great on my previous mustangs.

I also have the X-Ice Tires...work great with 240 lbs of sand in the trunk. I can go anywhere in the snow...

Bridgestone Blizzaks are also great winter tires.

A third vote for Michelin X-Ice. I used them for three years in Maine on dirt roads.

How do the X-Ice's handle on the dry roads? I want good snow/wet traction but I don't want to feel like I'm driving with a truck tire when it's dry, which will probably be most of the winter. The two I linked to above are listed as 'performance' winter tires so I assume they would be better on the dry road.

Is anybody running blizzaks on 17" bullets? I looked around for the Blizzaks first because Ive heard so many good things about them but I couldn't find them in the size to go with the 17's.

I think Michelin Pilot Alpins would work great for you in Chicago.
I have been through (2) winters here in Detroit with a set on my '06 GT.

In urban areas our roads are plowed 90% of the time.
The Pilots will give you the speed rating and handling of a performance tire. They work great on wet sloppy roads.
I have actually been down snowmobile trails with my Alpins!

I ran the GW3's for 2 1/2 winters in Chicago on the Stang. There were awesome. Trust me I put them to the test. I now have a winter beater.

I work for Goodyear so i may be a little biased

I priced a set of Blizzaks on the Tire Rack the same size as the factory Perellis. I have the optional 17's on mine. I have to go back and price then again later, if I don't get my "snow car" in time.

I went to a few tire stores this weekend and learned a few things. The Blizzaks aren't up on Tirerack yet because they are making them right now. The guy told me snow tires only get made for a very short period once a year, and once they're gone, they're gone. All the tires for sale now were made last year. He told me to check back in 3-4 weeks and there will be a lot more to choose from.

Yeah, but its hard to see that car sitting there all winter. I enjoyed driving it in the winter, it just got alot of car washes and under carriage wash downs in the shop. No more tho. Got a good deal on a used Accord (500) and sold the snow tires/wheels, to pay for it, and registration. No brainer there.

Mine too.

Would also be too expensive for me.

I have the Steeda brake upgrade kit on 14'' and I'd have to go at least 18'' wheels just for the winter...

No way... Rather ride my Lincoln Aviator .

That'll be me also, but I'll have to get them for my stock 18's, and in the summer I'll get some new 20's. I wish 16's would fit on a GT though.
