New Rear Tires Only?

I picked up a nice fat screw in the side wall of my rear tire the other day and need to replace that one along with the other rear tire. The fronts are still fine though.

Would it be OK for me to go with 255/45/18s in the rear and keep the 235s up front?

Also I am looking to get the BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KDW NT for the rear. I have never bought tires like this before (my dodge was quite simple with no performance in mind) and am concerned about upsetting the balance and handling. The KDW NT has a different tread than the KDWS that are up front. Will that be ok?

Or should I go with the same direct replacement.

I wouldn't think the handling balance would be too upset, some guys run drag radials on the street...

The handling characteristics will change, but you're talking about handling close to the limit. on the street you aren't really going to notice it.

Having un-matched pairs of tires can cause adverse wear. Again though it's probably not something you're going to necessarily notice. It's a possibility though.

Thanks for the input guys

I think I'm going to go with the NTs and upgrade the fronts in a few months. I have read some good reviews on the NTs overall.

I didn't know having different tires in the rear could effect wear on the fronts. Is that what I was reading jlmounce?

It won't make a bit of difference. Don't even worry about it.

I couldn't do it. The treads have to match or it'd be awful. But that's just me.

Got them put on. They seem to grip a little better but that may be because my rears needed to be replaced. I love the tread design as it looks really aggressive. The rear stance looks a little wider than I originally thought.

All in all, I feel good about my purchase and plan on getting these for the front as well in a month or too.

They shouldn't mess with my speedo right?

Any change in tire size will change the speedo a little bit, but from the factory gauges can be anywhere from 5-10% off. This is usually to reduce speeding, but also because sometimes it doesn't really matter if you're going 50 mph or 52...

You're rear tires are .801% smaller in diameter than the factory tires. at 60mph your speedometer should still read 60. You're fine.

On the wear, yes you were reading me correctly. Again though on tires that don't wear incredibly fast, you probably won't even notice it, but it is there.

However on my 99 Cobra I ran BFG Drag radials in the back. A tire known to wear rapidly. I ran the same tires on the front and through burn-outs spirited driving and some track time I got excellent tread wear from those tires having them matched to the front.

HMMM. Thats interesting as heck. I would have never thought that. I plan on changing the fronts when some more money becomes available. I really needed new tires in the back though.

It'll be fine. How many people run staggered wheels and tires? A LOT! I run 255/35/20s and 305/35/20s, soon to be 315/35/20s, and I daily drive my car. It's not bad.. The GT500 comes with 285s on the back that are staggered. I'd put wider tires on the back than 255s but that's just me.
