So I took my 05 Mustang GT to the dealer last Thursday because there was knocking coming from around the motor. It would stop when you turned the car off but then start back again after driving for a little while. It's not just a minor ticking noise either, it's a LOUD knocking noise. They ordered lifters and replaced the right side lifters. They called me today and said to come get it and it showed no signs of problems. On my way back to work, it started again. I peeled out and left lots of rubber on the road when I turned around and went back to the dealer. They call up Ford because they don't know what Ford wanted them to do next. Ford says to change the oil because maybe it's just a bad oil filter not letting oil get into the motor correctly. Changed the oil and guess what...no help! So next step is to pull the motor out and replace the right side head because they are positive it is from the right side after listening with the stethescope. So I'm going to be stuck with a car that has had the motor removed and a head replaced...and it's going to take at least a week!?!?!? I just wish I could roll the car off a cliff and be done with it. I can't believe I paid that much money for something that has this kind of problem with only 6500 miles on it. I would bet that this isn't going to fix the problem either. Next step is to get a Ford engineer to come in and look at it. I am completely disappointed with Ford and Mustangs right now. The technician told me a story about a couple on their vacation about 3 weeks ago that had to have their car towed in to the dealer because the piston came all the way through the block. He had to put a whole new motor in that car...boy that makes me feel good about Fords. What would I have to do or who would I need to contact about a lemon buyback??? I sure feel like I got one! If it were me, I would look on the bright side and take the oppourtunity to throw in some new engine goodies. Crappy luck though, try not to be too pissed off at the dudes who arent responsible for building the block.

That sucks. Any car will have a mix of lemons in it...you could blame Ford for this as long as you haven't made the rev limiter kick in a lot or anything. I know any sports car beckons for that.

And about that piston going through the block, that really sounds like they just overwound their motor.

Good luck though, and I hope Ford's cooperative in making a deal!

Have them change the oil, but strain it thru a paint filter- see if any metal in it-I'd also cut the filter apart looking for debris- if it does, I'd have service mgr/general mgr get ahold of the powers that be about getting a fresh engine- as Kzinti said something about a commodity hold or something on the 4.6's and 5 speeds a week or so ago...Ford wont want to worry about having to fix it a third time, as the way I read it, three strikes=lemonlaw~buyback...I'd hype that point up bigtime, as that hurts them more than anything... Hope they get you fixed back up right, and right away!

In most states, a lemon is a car that has been fixed at least three times for the same problem with no results or many problems with no fixes. My last lemon was a Buick LeSabre which was one of the most reliable cars on the road. Every car maker has lemons and it sucks to get one, but don't think switching brands will prevent it from happening again. The odds are against it happening 2 cars in a row no matter what.

I know how disappointing and frustrating it is to have a new car in the shop for a major problem. It sounds like your service department is following protocol in attempting to repair the problem and they are on the right track, especially since the regional engineer will be brought in if replacing the head doesn't work. Replacing a head isn't a minor job, but if it works, you'll be back on the road again and the ordeal will be a fading memory.

Try not to cave in to the temptation to get rid of the car, because you'll miss it every day. I was unable to keep my 05 for very long, and I'm driving a Honda right now. It is a nice car, but it is not even close to being a Mustang, and I'm saving to buy another 07 right now.

Good luck and keep us up to date.

"I can't believe I paid that much money for something that has this kind of problem with only 6500 miles on it."

It sucks you are having these kind of problems.

I just really have never understood what the price of a car has to do with it should not have any problems. I have had a couple of vehicles that cost a whole lot more than a mustang and they have run into problems. I know of people with cars that cost a lot less then a mustang that have not had any problems.

I could almost understand where you are coming from if it was some custom made vehicle, but you are talking about a mass produced car.

However no matter what it cost it all comes down to it is a machine that consist of 1000's of parts any of which could have a problem which could lead to other problems.

It sounds to me that the dealer is doing their best to resolve the situation. Search around these boards and you will find many people that have just basically had the door slammed in their face.

I wish you the best in getting it fixed but in the end no matter what is is just a car.

Sorry about your luck but to just say "no more Fords" is a bit rash don't you think? I know a lot more people that say "I'll never buy a dodge" "or a GM" etc than a Ford. Anyway, look at how cars are made these days and how many are produced. Yes, there are going to be some bad ones out there and that is what the, say it with me, warranty, is for. I had some engine problems with mine and yes, it had to go in several times before they figured out exactly what the problem was. They gave me a loaner and I drove off. No big deal. Did I miss the car, definately. I understand why you are extremely upset and know that no matter what we say most likely won't change your thoughts about this.

I guess I'm just concerned now that they are going to pull the motor out to replace the head and thats not even going to be the problem. Does it sound like a problem with the head? I just wouldn't think that the knock would come and go with that kind of problem.

It sounds potentially that it could be a cylinder head problem.

If I were you i'd document everything. If they can't sort it out after this, i'd look into your local lemon laws if I were you.

You might have a bad case of piston slap, i have it, but it last for only about 20secs in the morning. And acoarding to Ford, piston slap is very normal for the 4.6 & 5.4 (yea right).

Listen, We all have bad luck in our lives some with cars, others with anything you can imagine. Don`t blame it on Ford. I am sure every car manufacturer in the world puts out lemons. So you got a bad one, its not the end of the world. This is where a persons character comes out in how they handle a crisis. I personally like Fords and I have had some bad ones but right now I wouldn`t trade my 06 mustang for anything but a Ford GT. I feel for you though and hope you get this resolved one way or the other. Best of LUCK!

All makes/models have occasional serious problems, and they've all been getting less frequent. Hopefully yours gets fixed quickly.

I have handled it very well at the dealer. I try not to fuss to much at them because I know they are doing all that they can to try and get it fixed. They have been very nice about the whole situation and I am really impressed with them. I'm just pretty frustrated right now since this is my first big after college purchase sitting in the shop right now.

I had piston slap in my 99 Ranger with the 4.0. I changed to Mobil 1 and it went away. (at least the noticable sound went away) The truck also went away at my first opportunity. It was a Redcarpet lease vehicle. Piston slap is NOT good anyway you slice it.

GM LS1 engines, at least those prior to 2002, are known to have a piston slap problem. This problem isn't unique to Ford. The Aluminum blocks transmit more noise than iron ones to, which makes the noise more audible.

at least by your story it seems they have been trying to do everything to resolve it.

they may not have an answer but it seems they havent given up looking for it.

be happy about that.
