Maybe some of you have had this dilemma in the past. So hopefully you can give me some good pointers. My wife :worship: of 23 years, last night, said that I should sell my 66 to make room for the 05 GT. Notice that she said should. At this point it is just a suggestion, but given time it will be more like a request and beyond that, who knows. She's always been real good about my toys, but I never had 2 toy cars before at the same time. I will not be driving to 05 in the winter so her contention is "what are you going to do with 2 cars in the winter"? My answer......the same thing I do with 1, just expand on it. I really do not want to get rid of my 66. It is an absolutely beautiful car. It has 60k original miles. It was owned by a Chevy dealer owner for 20 years and at one point never moved it for 12. How can I woo this firery red head of mine?

I went through the same thing a couple years ago. I had a number of classic Fords over the years. The last one I had was a 1972 Gran Torino Sport (fastback) with 351 Cleveland, 4 speed with only 54K original miles on it. It was very original. I had it for 22 years, longer thanmy wife has been around.

I took her with me to test drive a new 2002 Mustang GT. At the end of the day she wanted me to get a Mustang GT, as long as I got rid of the Torino. I ended up buying a cherry low mileage used 2001 GT and sold my Torino to a real 1972 Torino freak who is on a mision to turn it into a 99 point car.

It's 2 years later I'm glad that I got rid of my Torino and got the 2001 GT. I don't miss it anywhere near as much as I thought I would. The Torino has a new home with an even more dedicated owner and I have an immensely more practicle car with my 2001 GT. It's rude and crude enough to remind me of the 72 Torino, but with A/C, EFI, OD trannie and other creatue comforts its a better car. I'm driving my 01 GT about 5 times as many miles / year as the old Torino and I don't worry about where I park it, becuse, unlike the '72 Torino, its easily replaceable if anything happens to it.

So get rid of the 66 and get an 05. I'm sure once you sit in and drive an 05 you'll be sold.

You gotta convince her to keep it. If it was already paid off why not? A 66 with miles that low is pretty rare. My mom has a 66 vert and is planning on buying an 05 too. I think if my wife gave me that ultimatum I would keep the 66 and forget the 05. Just my opinion though. You have to look at the new mustang as a mass produced car as it will be. THere will be lots of them. Not to many of your car. Let me know if you plan to sell it B)

Another thing to consider is to drive the 05 in the winter. I know it sounds bad and I will be storing mine but only because I don't have a cherry 66 like you B)

But you could always drive it in the winter that way you can justify having both. For god sakes don't get rid of the 66. :bang:

If forced to decide, I would keep the 66.

For your situation, if the 66 means that much, explain that to her, and that you can keep both without much difficulty. Maybe she has financial concerns. Do you have a place to keep both? Will it displace her car? As long as we can pay the bills, save some money (and place doesn't look like a used car lot) my wife doesn't care what I do.

If you sit down and just be open with her, it will go a long way to avoiding issues down the line that might arise.

hear ye hear ye i have a solution......buy your wife the 05 mustang and keep the 66. She'll love you for it.

Then when shes not around you make love to the 05 or whatever is you do. Heck drive it around town when she is in bed.

You have to be sneaky not compromising.

Buy a $3 mil life insurance policy under her name with you as the principal beneficiary. And get her a dozen roses. 0:-)

I also have a problem like that. I want an 05 V6 really bad. But I have a 76 F-100 sitting in my driveway that I could not part with. its a beautiful truck. Heres my problem, I'm going off to school soon. and I'm thinking take the 05 with me if I get it. better on gas than a 390ci in my truck. But then at home I have my truck just sitting there. Plus I'm already going to be poor when i go to school as it is because I spent all my school money on the truck resto. So should I get the 05 and get half decent mileage and have a hot looking car. Leave the truck at home. OR hold off on Stang till after school?

Don't get rid of the car. Wait a few years and pick up a much cheaper used 05 if you still want it. Look at it this way, which would be easier to get in a few years, the 66 or a late model Mustang? There ya go.

When you marry a woman you got to tell her what to expect from you, Mustangs are in our blood and we will always want every one we see. Tell her be glad you got the car hobby and not the strip club and bar hobby. Get her involved with the cars.

Oh, this is a simple one. Just buy her a bigger house, one with enough garage space for your current toys and maybe some room for for future toys.

Seriously, if I had to decide, I'd keep the '66. Simple economics.

Ponyboy, you are in a difficult spot. Wow, 23 years ! That is wonderful, and I know how much you must value your wife's opinions and thoughts. In this situation, I think you are the only one who knows exactly what to do. I also had a 66 coupe and adored it very much, but unfortunately I let go of it a long time ago. I do miss it, and that is the primary reason I am getting the 2005, it reminds me so much of my old car. You had mentioned that you will end up with 2 toy cars after getting the 2005. Of course that would be awesome, but you need to consider if this is what you really want to have. It sounds like your wife thinks that 1 toy car is enough. I know my wife would think the same way. Hmm.. any chance that you could turn your 1966 toy into a toy that draws a paycheck ? Perhaps there are car clubs, or organizations that would pay to use your car in parades, or car shows ? It's a wild idea, but could be worth looking into (there might be some great tax benefits). I wish you the best with your decision.
