It's pretty simple, really. There's a red, green and blue LED. You have levels of intensity for each of them, and then you can mix the levels between them (five levels each, if I remember) to get up to 125 color choices (5 to the 3rd power).

what i don't understand about my color is the irrational custom settings.
it's impossible to set any of the three colors to 0 in custom, 1 is the lowest. Don't think it makes a difference? Compare the preset Red, Blue, or Green to 511, 151, or 115. Notice how much more vibrant the presets are. Also, a max of 5 is a wacky setting for color. At least 8 bit would have given us 256 colors
i know, i know, nitpicking. these are just minor annoyances i found with the system before i figured out how to select the presets
