Cool My Stang tracks down a hit/run driver

OK I know this needs pictures for full effect, maybe swing by and see if the wrecks are still there.

I was coming home tonight wating to turn left and this Tracker on the curb gets nailed and comes somersaulting onto the sidewalk ahead of me. Then the older lady who hit it saunters past me in her Chevy Malibu as her airbag deflates.

I go to see if anyone is in the now upside down truck, and neighbours coming flying out to see what happened and confirm it was parked and empty.

We turn around to look for the other car and can't find the lady-she has driven off in her badly damaged car. So I jump back into my GT and go looking. Ran a pregnant yellow light and see her up a hill...u turn and get back on her tail, but her car is dead. I found her 4 blocks away from the scene. I park in front of her and go talk, telling her what she did and that it was illegal to leave an accident scene. I see she isn't right, really quiet, but think it is shock...then I see her unscrewing a bottle in a brown bag and two cans of beer in the car...hello cops. She was totally gooned

Funny thing is I am the eye witness and as I talk to the cop he asks me for my ID. I go into my wallet to find my driver's license is missing (oh s#$t) .
He asks for my name and phone number and says I can go. As I head to my car he asks if that is my Mustang...I kind of sheepishly say yes and he says....

"NICE CAR" , I will call you later about this.
Gonna get a temp license tomorrow morning, hopefull no issues

Good on you for trackin' her down! And I'm glad nobody got hurt.

You did the right thing... strange about the ID though...

Will they never learn?

Thanks guys. It was amazing how slowly the Tracker rolled, I could see every move in slow motion, then the image of the old lady going past me with the airbag deflating and coming off her face.
Then your mind gets racing and the adrenaline pumping....the crash aftermath speeds up then you forget details.
I am gad her car was so badly damaged b/c I had no idea what make, color or plate # it was until I saw it again...great witness. I felt a bit sorry for her, but it is one less drunk driver off the roads...and she was really dangerous.

Also glad nothing came anywhere near me or my Mustang..been reading those "wrecked stang"threads and am getting paranoid.

Good story, nice work bro just add a few more visuals to your story like...

peeled out
lit up the tires to catch up
downshifted into 2nd to make the yellow
power slid through a U turn

Oh yeah, didn't I mention that, it was a full on Bullit style chase; hills, jumps and I think she might have even taken a few shots at me with her shotgun.

More like chasing down a drunken wounded cheezie

I wish more people would do the same. So many times people see things they know are not right and just turn the other cheek because they don't want to get involved. F' that. Do the right thing because that is what you would want if you were the victim.

Good job my friend. Good job.

Good job, I would do the same.

I once ran down 2 juvenile girls that ran into my neighbors house with their car, and too young to drive, so I chased them on foot cuz they left the scene too. Good times tho. Cops gave me a handshake . No kidding.

That was the image going through my head as I read the last half of your story.

The Bullitt version will be how I tell it at parties

I felt sorry for the lady until the cop called last night and said she refused to blow the breath analyzer for alcohol . It will throw doubt on just how drunk she was and make their case against her harder. I will testify and do everything they want to help get her from driving again......

That morning, I was on the same road with my 6yr old son for the first time riding bikes on the street. Same street she tried to get away on. She was in my neighborhood and it could have been us she hit.

That's a pretty talented car you've got there.

I'd have popped her a couple times in the face for good measure. It'd be chalked up as resulting from the accident. Folks caught driving drunk need to be tied to the back bumper of a trooper's cruiser for a shift or two. The one's who are involved in a wreck and leave the scene get tied to the front bumper.

She will still have a hard time getting out of the DWI since all of the observations made by the trooper will be used against her. I'm a cop, and when I write a report on a DWI, I make a case against the driver based on their driving, my observations of the driver, his/her actions, words, answers to questions...etc. I make a case based on everything except the Breathalyzer readings. Those are just icing on the cake. Most other officers do the same thing.

Basically, even if you don't blow, the case is still made based on everything else.

Good job Scott! It's nice when citizens get involved and it helps us out too.

I had a similar experience a few weeks ago except it was my neighbors brick mailbox. He was caught about 2 blocks away by me, another off duty officer and the on duty officer that showed up after I called. Nothing like some excitement when I'm supposed to be off duty. Anyway, he ran on foot when the patrol showed up but, we caught him. He blew a .174 and .160 bac and ended up with DWI, evading arrest and leaving the scene of an accident charges.

Cool

Thanks Jimmy.
I don't envy anyone in the police force..you guys have a tough job. The adrenaline rushes to catch the person, then how they lie and try to weasle out, all the red tape and legal mumbo-jumbo..it would drive me bonkers.
You guys have my utmost respect.

Scott
