My Ford dealer is a clown
#1
I placed an order with my dealer in early August for an '05 Mustang Premium with a few extra fixings. The contract says "MSRP" at the top, but is otherwise blank. We had a verbal agreement that accepting the car was contingent on a reasonable final price.
So I wandered in on Friday to talk price. I had already scouted out a couple of other dealers, who offered $800 and $1000 over invoice. My dealer would not budge a dime from MSRP. So I asked for my deposit ($1000) back. He would not give it to me. I talked to both the salesman and the sales manager. The salesman, of course, said he had no such verbal agreement. I walked out.
I left a message with the owner, who is to be back at the dealership on Monday. I will give him 24 hours to fix the situation, then go place an order with one of the other two dealers.
Next steps if the owner is also a clown: Dispute $1000 deposit with Visa; call the Better Business Bureau; call Ford.
I thought this sort of crap went out with the '80s.

Man - that is pretty crappy customer service. I'd have to believe you are going to see some type of satisfaction, especially if you press the issue.
I see alot of people getting $400 over invoice deals.....no reason you shouldn't too.

Good luck working things out.

I was an idiot to trust him, I guess. But the thing is, you know that box on the contract where the dealer writes in the amount of my downpayment that he gets to keep if I don't take delivery, and I initial my agreement? That box is empty. So I could simply not take delivery and he would have to refund my deposit.
I could also agree to the terms. I bet the dealer would then want to fill out the rest of the contract, including that box. What if I said "No, no, let's stick with this contract the way it is. If you think it's binding on me, then it must be binding on you." Do you think he would agree to that?
The guy is a clown and illogical.

One thing I've learned (with one recent experience I don't wish to talk about), GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING...... EVERYTHING......
Verbal agreements are crap IMO. Yes, technically they are binding in many cases but often you have to go through heck to resolve issues involving V.Agreements.
NEVER will I put down a dime without having a salesman sign a printed sheet listing my order options, my wishes upon delivery (ie. no dealer symbols etc) and price above invoice ......... I will sign it and so will he.
There are a lot of people that can be trusted. However, many cannot. I know its pessimistic but that's reality. Protect yourself always.

I'd love to hear the outcome of this one. I don't know how they can keep your $1000 deposit when all you have to say is they promised invoice price. They don't have anything in writing to say that they didn't, do they? If they don't, your word against the salesguy.

I just had a chat with another dealer whom I might order from later. He said this is not the first time he's heard about a similar problem. His manager refused to take orders until the prices were out.
