I have been a huge Mustang fan since I was about 10 years old. I have posters, models, magazines, books...you name it and I have it. I'm 23 and recently graduated from college and got a great full-time job. I saw the 2005 Mustangs and knew it was finally time to get one. I ordered my Silver GT on 11/01/04 and am waiting patiently as I don't even have a build date or VIN#.

The point of this thread is that I have NEVER bought or owned a new car, much less a Mustang. I was hoping you guys might have some tips and advice for me on how to take care of it or what to do. I've read stuff about "breaking it in" and whether to wax it right away or not. Any tips you could give would greatly help me as I wait for my dream car to arrive.

Depends on what you want to do. Alot of people on the forum like to personalize/improve on the car.

Exterior maintenance look at autopia web site http://www.autopia.org/forums/

Mods, look here. There is a tremendous amount of information.

Think about whether you want to just drive or enjoy, or turn it into more of an experience.

The car drives great. It is fine out of the box. Some of us just can't help but tinker.

Mods seem to break along the lines of the captions under 2005 exterior, performance, interior.

Drive it awhile, and see what you want to do. And, keep reading what people are talking about on this forum. I think the more time passes, the better choices and history will be. The choices are personal. As an example, I put on MAC axle backs, way too loud for me. I like the magnaflows (other people felt they were too tame). Either way the comments people made on the forum were very useful, and I felt they were dead on about the magnaflows. Just a tad more sound than stock, a little throatier. I felt they are more quiet at higher speeds. The point is these comments will help avoid making choices not ultimately suitable to you.

Good luck.

Break in:

Engine: Allow engine to warm up, drive agressively, vary speed. Load the engine (give it wot or near that while rolling at a moderate speed, up through a few gears) and allow engine braking to slow the car a lot. (match revvs, downshift, etc) Change oil soon, try Ford 5w20 until 2500 miles then switch to AMSOIL 0W30. Try not to do too many hard launches (very high load, low speed) for the first few heat cycles, this will help the rearend gears out a bit.

Driveline: You could change the diff (suggested) and trans (eh...) fluid in 50 or so miles if you are keeping the car forever. Or not. Don't drop the clutch a whole lot or smoke it, but slip it some on moderate launches to bed the friction plate into the flywheel and pressure plate.

Brakes: Don't make any real hard stops for 500 or so miles, making sure to do a lot of going and stopping. Then season the rotors and bed the pads. I mean make a few hard stops.

After a week or so wash the car real good and apply a few coats of your favorite wax. Meguiars, mothers, whatever.

Treat the leather (if applicable) soon. Zymol.

Some of these things will hopefully make a lot of difference (leather treatment) while the rest won't do much, but will make you feel better.

Enjoy the car! I hope I'm where you are in 1 year.

Rule 1
When you go to the store or out to eat, find the parking spot that is way out in BFE. You will not reget it in the long run.

Rule 2
Respect the power, but do not fear it.

Rule 3
Baby it like you've never babied anything before.

Rule 4
Drive it like you stole it.

Rule 5
Have a blast

Rule 6
You have to find out what this one is.

As far as your question.
Hang around the forum. Check out the stickies. There are some mighty smart people here.

Congratulations of a great choice of car. Think you will find out everything you could possibly want to know on the forum. The most important thing is ENJOY IT! The second is that its your car and what you do or don't with it is your business regarding mods, etc. Warning - as far as mods go, they can be addictive - Hope you get it real soon

HA right- I am the one who goes out to the bar till 2 am and volunteers to be the DD just so I can drive my car.......

Note to self: Five hours of sleep last night, and I am the only one of the four of us who have to help my parents move without the bad head this morning

I tell you- this mustang is the MOST fun I have EVER had driving! I hit 3,000 miles yesterday(and first oil change) and LOVE LOVE LOVE my mustang!

As Curly said in 'City Slickers' (the movie with Billy Crystal), there's just one thing you need to know.
