My car is paid for & I am thinking about dumping insurance to liability only.
I got quoted about $2500 for 6 months of coverage from GEICO for what I have now with State Farm. I pay about 840 every six months or $1680 annually. My insurance is up for renewal in June so I'll start shopping around to see if I can get a lower rate for the coverage I currently have but I definitely wouldn't drop any coverage. Matter of fact I increased my coverage from 25/50 to 100/300 at last renewal.
Hey Kevin something I found out last week that might also lower it a little is to get an umbrella policay for personal liability. I was shopping my rates and am probably going to switch to State Farm. he mentioned this...which I have a corporate one but not personal and knew I should have...and it was like $115 a year for me for 1 million in coverage. It dropped my rate down enough to pay for it within $5. I got a quote of $1200 yr. a 99 taurus on it as well. And that was on the Shelby GT not the regular GT! I am considering buying one is why the different car. Anyway if you dont already have it it may lower your rate or at least give you more CYA if someone decides to sue you.

I would be leary of dropping collision and comprehensive. You never know when a tree will fall on your car or you try to avoid a semi's rubber in the road and his a light pole. I have full coverage on both wife's 05 Solara vert and my 07 Mustang GT vert and pay less than $600 every six months with GEICO. That's 300000/100000/300000 with 500 deductible. I put 24000 miles per year on the GT and 15000 miles per year on the Solara. Maybe clean record and nearing 60 helps. Sat down with State Farm which has our homeowner's insurance - they asked about auto and when I told them I had GEICO they didn't even open their book.
I'm 51 so I get the age discount....plus home/auto....plus safe driver...plus annual mileage. BTW, besides the other options to lower premium, I could change the Comprehensive deductible from my current $120 to $500 and lose another $120 per year, but I'm not sure if I want to do that since Comp covers alot of things that I have no control over (windshield chips, theft, vandalism, etc.).
first - check to see if texas is like florida (i think it is) where the windshield is a no-deductable item - meaning it is done without your comp. coverage (or at least without you having to do a deductable). having replaced several over the years with no policy increase - its worth looking in to.
next - if you were ever military or government (or even a parent) look into USAA. my father-in-law was retired military and a few years after being married, he qualified us for the insurance company. rates are very reasonable for both auto and homeowners. our county sucks for insurance, and i pay a little more than you are now for both of my cars 100/300 and a bunch of other crap that i likely wont ever use.... but i will keep to make things easier "just in case"
Do a cost benefit analysis for 5 years. How much would you end up paying in insurance? How much would you have to pay to fix the damage/repair yourself? Chances are you will pay more for the insurance than if you had to fix the damage yourself.
That's amazing, because my experience has been that GEICO sucks wind. They were just shy of 'Double' my cuurent premium w/Farmers.
Progressive didn't give me quotes from its competitors and wanted more money than Farmers. GEICO wanted a lot more money. I thought they were joking at first.
