My 05 makes odd noise
#1
I got my 05 GT with automatic trans on Tuesday. Drives great, except for one thing. On deacceleration and most notable at 40-50 mph I hear a very loud and very obvious whining noise. It disappears immediately when you accelerate. I'm thinking it's either driveshaft or axel problem. Anyone else heard this noise?

If this is the same problem as our Jaguar XJ6 had that is kinda really pathetic . We had a whining on acceleration and deceleration from the differential. We had to purchase a new one to make that go away. If the differential isn't good from the factory that is VERY odd. In any case, get it checked out. If it is a differential problem, you don't want to drive it too long with that part bad.
(Just in case you were wondering, our Jaguar had 62,000 on it when we got it.)

My 99 does that but it's like a howling noise.

I wonder if there's a bad backlash setting in the differential. In my '98 GT I wound up with a pinion seal leak. I didn't have any noise to indicate a problem, and wouldn't have found it except that I left town for a few days and found a very small spot on the garage floor under the diff when I got back. Long story short, I made them tear the whole thing down and it turns out the carrier pin that holds the spider gears was sheared and floating in the diff and the the carrier bearings were all shot like they weren't hardened properly out of the factory. When they put it back together, I finegelled a deal to have them put in some 3.73s at no extra charge.... I'd suggest havin' it looked at ASAP before something really goes wrong.... and hey... you might even get a gear swap out of it.

HAHAHA...just reminded me of something. When I woud accelerate in my 99 GT, it would whistle....I called it the Mustang Whistle.
I notice a sound when I decelerate, like when no brakes are applied, and the engine is naturally slowing the vehicle down. It's hard to describe the sound...

that noise is normal.
i have a buddy that works for ford and he is an engineer and he mentioned this to me a few months back. he does testing on the Ford GT and the 05 Mustang. he said it is just the differential gears whining, and it only does it on deceleration. he said this is going to be just a nuisance noise, but it doesnt mean there is a problem. its just something that we are gonna have to ignore. that just means either turn up the volume on the Shaker 1000, or listen to the sweet 4.6 growl!!!!

this is what exactly happened in my dads 03 focus, the dealer ended up replacing the whole tranny. They eventually said the gears were loose inside. if it bothers you that much, continue to complain and they will put a new one in for you.

like I said.... sounds like backlash in the differential. The design of the gears, the way the intermesh, there shouldn't be any noise like that if the backlash is set properly.... I know if I spent $25K on a car, I'd be one P.O.ed mother humper if my diff blew up shortly after the warranty expired. Problems like this usually don't take but 10K miles to manifest themselves in the form of a blown rear end and a good lookin car on the side of the road, but I'd nip this one in the bud. "normal noise?" a differntial should never be noisy. If you want to get your hands dirty, take the plug out of the diff and take a look at the fluid. You might not see any metal grit this early in the game, though. Just do like Steve said... have a tech either go for a ride with you, or give 'em the keys and let them do a drivability test on it.

May be the differential, may be something else, may be nothing. However, (IMO) I would get the dealer to look at it so it is on their records "just in case"

maybe it's one of those test models they have been beating around.
Clint is right. So is Steve! Should'nt be any whining noise in the differential.
but like he said, haul the plug. If you have fine metal filings in with your gear oil, you have damage!
could be a number of things ...... crown & pinion, axle splines.
Who knows, in all the excitement, maybe they forgot to top it off with gear oil?

are you running the AC or defrost? the compressor pump for the AC will drip condensation on the exhaust or other hot surfaces when you drive. The defrost runs the AC pump when you use it so that it can pull moisture out of the air that you're trying to dry off the windows with.... doesn't make much sense to pull humidity in from the outside, now does it. That's one of the things I find funny with most econo cars... they haven't put that equation together yet you have to manually select outside air so that it doesn't recycle the humidity. Those Japanese.... they can build an engine, but they can't defrost a window.
I believe that Fords also will run the AC pump on the floor setting too.... the only setting that doesn't run it is "vent" ..... check the owner's manual, it will explain this.
