Detroit -- Today Ford announced that after over four decades of selling the Mustang as a two door coupe 2+2, they will offer the new 2006 Mustang in a wagon body style. In a highly controversial move, Ford justified this choice saying that it would provide competition to Dodge's unchallenged Magnum sport wagon. Ford also mentioned that this Mustang wagon might even find it's way overseas. Available are the regular coupes 4.0L SOHC 16-valve V6 and 4.6L SOHC 24-valve V8 engines. Transmission choices also resemble the coupes with either a 5-speed manual or automatic. Base prices have not yet been announced, but expect a 5-speed V8 to retail somewhere around 26,000. While not exactly trumping the Magnum in power, it definately provides a stronger argument with the price

That's an extended Chevy Citation. Blah. This isn't for real is it?

I would not put it past Ford either. The Magnums are selling pretty well, and the Freestyle is not the answer. When beancounters make the decisions, you never know what you'll get.
My main question is "Will it have the IRS"????

In 1957 Ford had a great 2 door wagon, in the seventies they had a nice Pinto 2 door wagon, I'd like to see a Mustang 2 door wagon with more of a squared off back that the phopchop example, or maybe the 57 glass.

IRS Fairy: *Poof*
New Mustang Driver: "Who are you?'
IRS Fairy: "I'm the IRS Fairy. Just ask and your new Mustang shall have an independent rear suspension."
New Mustang Driver: "Cool! Can you put one on my car?"
IRS Fairy: "Your wish shall be granted!"
*POOF* The new Mustang's live axle has just been replaced with an independent rear suspension.
New Mustang Driver: "Wow, that's awesom-- wait a second... why does my chassis suddenly have the stiffness of wet pasta?"
IRS Fairy: "Never said it was perfect."
Learn from the adventures of this new Mustang driver and his encounter with the IRS fairy-- don't gripe about the car not having IRS until you have actually DRIVEN the car!!!!!
As for the Mustang wagon, I'm really hoping that doesn't happen-- the Mustang is a 2-door coupe and shall forever be a 2-door coupe.
If Ford makes a new Fairlane or Galaxie based on DEW Lite, I would like to see something along the lines of a Country Squire wagon, with the Mustang's V8.
