DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor, the nation's second biggest automaker, said Tuesday that overall January sales fell 5.1%, as an increase in car sales was more than offset by a decline in truck sales.

Ford (F) sold 5.1% more cars last month than in January 2004. But truck sales fell 9.8%.

Ford has long had much stronger sales of trucks than cars. But last year, it introduced several car models to try to stem its declining market share.
Ford said combined sales for three of those cars — the Ford Five Hundred, the Ford Freestyle and the Mercury Montego — increased about 5% from December to January.

Meanwhile, the hot-selling Mustang continued to sell at a fast pace. Its sales were about 33% higher than a year ago, the company said.
"This is a great showing for our new products in an otherwise weak month," said Earl Hesterberg, vice president for North American sales and service.
Several analysts had predicted Ford would get a boost in early 2005 because the introductions of the Five Hundred and the new Mustang came late in 2004.

Overall, analysts were forecasting a weak January following strong sales in December. Ford said overall industry sales would be down about 30% from December.

How is Mustang up 30% with all the problems they are having producing them. I have yet to see a GT on the street here in Minnesota, and I do a lot of driving. Do they use numbers from Mustangs that are orded but not yet delivered? Approx. how many GTs should be produced this year? Anyone know? Can's wait to order mine.....

The industry was hurting last year. A lot of enthusiasts and consumers held out on buying to get the newest body style.

I still haven't seen 2005 Mustang on the streets in Milwaukee. And I drive to downtown every day.

Good news for the Mustang, sad for the trucks. I love Ford Trucks.

They may not be in your area but there are 6 GT's where I live, which considering this is the middle of the winter and I am normally driving in 6" of snow, that is pretty good if you ask me.

You may not see them on the road but that doesn't mean they are not selling. Where I work, after I got mine 2 other people bought GT's but have stored them until the summer.

I am suprised myself its only 33% I would have guessed closer to 100-200 percent as well.

I have seen 2 GT's. The first was on the freeway in October, the second just being offloaded at my local dealership a couple days ago. I have seen 2 Base Coupes. One on the freeway in November and a guy at one of our Starbucks here bought one.

You know what is funny though-I know of 10 GTs sold to people who live in my town of 50,000, but I never see them. Then again, people say they never see me around town and mine is Orange.

Go figure

Quote = Route66 How is Mustang up 30%
Mustang sales are NOT up 30% that is PR spin.

Total Mustang sales are un ONLY 3.8% over Jan 04.

Jan 05 - 10,285
Jan 04 - 9,906

What the Ford press release said was that "Retail Sales were up 33%. Overall Mustang sales are up only 4% becasue Ford is limiting fleet and rental sales.

IMHO January Mustang sales were pretty pathetic. That's an annual sales rate of only 123,000 / year, which is below the old Mustang.
