I suppose it can be a family car in a pinch, but with small back seats and 2 doors, it not really supposed to be a family car. Its a great affordable sports car. If you want the family-style ride, get the Five Hundred, Freestyle or Explorer. Putting kids in and out of back seats, especially if car seats are involved, can be a pain in the butt best reserved for bigger back seats and four doors. My son will be 7 this year and is the right size for the back seat, but I dont' think anyone would want to ride back there for a long period of time.
I have been waiting to torture my kids their whole lives...... Wanted to be well past car seat and juice box age before I finally got something I wanted.

They dooooooooo fit back there, just not with the caverns of room the olds had. Its a "snug" fit.....but hey

My son is 17 now and he grew up with me driving Mustangs. The car seat stage was kinda rough but they don't stay in them long. As he got older I hauled the baseball team around, the golf team etc.. and the kids were always lined up wanting to ride with me. They never complained about the back seat. They just complained that I could not get more kids in there.
Buy you a Pony, but I bet it becomes your wifes daily driver.

My 2005 Mustang GT is my daily driver.

Wife, 2 girls (9 and 7 and tall), and I'm 6'7" and 285lbs. I'm a tight fit, but it's all good. Girls love the car. Yes, I have to pull the seat up to let them in, and they have to fit their feet behind the seats (which are both all the way back), but they love the car. They would much rather ride in it than in my Explorer or the wifes Sable.

We have the Explorer, which is pretty ragged, for grocery and Home Depot runs, that sort of thing. The wife's Sable is low mileage and she drives it to BART (rapid transit) daily, and I take the kids to school in the Stang daily, rain or shine.

Great answer..."torture the kids...past car seat and juice box age..."

I got a big grin off of that one!

Thank everyone for sharing. It seems like you Mustangers are not the "glass is half full" type; more like right up to the rim almost but never spilling a drop, Thanks! This is the stuff that means alot more to me that 0-60.

Daily driver and pulls duty as a family car here. We have one daughter who'll be 3 in May, and we have a son due June 9. Car seat fits with no problem, we just bought the protectors that go underneath the car seat and on the back of the front seats to protect them from shoes. No problems so far, and the sis-in-law even fits in the back when she rides with us(she's 22). Sure it isn't a great family car, but it's passable.

I love the Mustang but I have to say it is not a good family car. There is very little leg room in the back and if you have car seats (especially rear facing ones) it is very hard to hook the kids up. 2 door vehicles are just that way. My wife, 3 year old and 8 month old all piled in to go to dinner and a New Years party and I have to say I will, at all costs, never do it again. It is just a pain in the hiney.

I have a 2004 Explorer Sport Trac that fits the family very comfortably along with any cargo (bikes) that I need to take as well. The Mustang is mine to have fun, plain and simple.

My wife and I have 6 children. We have a '99 Stang and a Taurus wagon (for a 2nd car LOL!) We're going to be purchasing an '05 GT in a couple of months! We're all Mustang 'thusies. I'm trying to decide whether to sell the '99 or keep it and have 2 ponies and a wagon. HA, I kill me. All the children are excited about the '05

I took her out today with the kiddies for some errands(first time).........NOT so fun anymore. Now I gotta open two doors, and refix my seat everytime one of em gets out. Ideally, not the perfect family car.
