Mustang + Mountains = Fun (Pics)

I ended up driving back to Colorado for the holidays, and had quite a bit of fun in the Mustang. One of the days I was there, I went skiing at Monarch, and was just tearing up the mountain passes. Thankfully the roads were completely dry at the time, so snow and ice wasn't an issue. On average, I was doing 25 over what the signs recommended with the curves, and the car did fine. The funny part of the drive came when I saw another Mustang GT ahead of me. Caught up to it pretty quickly, and saw Texas plates on it as well. For a bit I thought it was going to be two stangs taking to the curves, but the other driver didn't seem experienced with such roads. So in the end, I passed them up to continue enjoying the pass we were in.

I also discovered that the Mustang is definitely not a good snow car. I managed to get it stuck three times when I parked on unplowed sidestreets while visiting people, but thankfully it just took a bit of time to work my way out of each situation. When the second storm came through, I just left the car parked for 2 days till conditions improved.

I did manage to take it out to a parking lot and have a bit of fun with TCS off. Also took it to a good spot for pictures, but sadly the car was filthy from all the dirt and crap on the roads.

I just moved to Denver, and amen to the hockey-puck handling on the snow. I put a couple of very heavy boxes in the trunk and it helped quite a bit, though. My car won't stand a chance of being kept clean until the snow melts, but I can't wait to get it up into the mountains. Great pics, BTW.

I wish we had that much snow in Wisconsin. I would love to test 4x4 on my F-150.

There's a good drive here in Washington up Spirit lake hwy to Mt. St. Helens. On a nice summer day, it's quite a road trip & a view stright into the crater left by the eruption....

Yep, RWD + front heavy car + high horsepower = slapping on a pair of skates on snow & ice.

The amazing part is that the view there is in the city of Colorado Springs. I grew up in that part of town, and miss it quite a bit now that I am out of the area. I spent quite a bit of time just driving around in the mountains during the trip.

Oh, funny thing happened after I took that picture. Some ricer pulled into that lot with his family to look at the view. No words were exchanged, but he was just staring at my car while I took a few other pictures. I made sure to make the V8 purr on the way out so he knew the difference between a real engine noise, and the lawnmower noise his made.

I did do several there, but the problem with that lot was the snow was still too powdery. I managed to get it stuck once in the lot, but rocking it back and forth eventually got it free. I did do quite a few doughnuts in another parking lot before the second storm, after a lot of the snow had melted and refroze. It was the perfect mix of ice, snow and slush to get the car spinning.

winter tires (Blizzaks, X-ICE, Graspics, Scorpions) really make a difference on snow and ice.

No, unfortunately I didn't even think about it, and it's probably been a few years since I ate there. I'll have to remember to drop by next time I'm in the area, I do remember it being quite good.

If only Austin wasn't 14 hours away from it all. I'm already missing the mountains again.

Nice pictures any chance that yours came with Perellis on it , They are a soft tire and Totally suck and any wet road or snowy surface period, I think my 07 will come with BF Goodrich and if they suck off they go and Eagle F1's or Toyo's I was thinking Glad your trip was safe they do handle great on dry roads, my son & I went from BC to California on the Coastle highway this summer it was some Fun !

My GT came with BF Goodrich G-Force TA KDWS tires, and I haven't changed them out. They are supposed to be rated for all weather, but there isn't much you can do on that much snow with rear wheel drive and non studded tires.

Looks great! i haven't been out to Colorado for a few years, last time was out in the Alpine Loop area with my Jeep. I am really hoping I can get out there with the Mustang, maybe do the RMNP. Whenever I do go to CO, I always plan a day for just driving through the mountains.

Yeah, I'm sure glad it doesn't snow in Wisconsin anymore.

the P-Zero Nero's on my 05 do quite well i have gotten stuck once in two winters here and our winters last 5 months and the snow sticks around all that time. to get unstuck i just stuck my oem rubber floormat under one of the back tires.( the drivers side mat is thinner and is easier to stick under the tire)
