Hi everybody!

I am in love with the 2005 and am seriously considering buying one. However, I do quite a lot of scuba diving and am very concerned about the cargo room. The best solution would be to outfit a trailer specially for my scuba diving needs (my wife and me both dive), so we could enjoy the mustang and continue to dive, without buying a more scuba friendly vehicle.
Do you think it would be a good idea to install a trailer hitch on my new mustang, would it spoil everything (looks), is there appropriate room for it? How would it affect the driving when I have the trailer attached?

just curious!

It all depends on how big the trailer is going to be.
If it is small, you can out on a hideaway hitch. Won't look so bad.
But if the trailer is big and you have to use a large rating hitch,
it might look bad (imo). It is all up to you.

I got two tanks and two peoples gear in my Camaro...and still had the back seat. I don't see why you'd need a trailer. How far and how long do you go on dive trips that require you to drive there?

You can secure the tanks (from rolling) using your weight belts. Unless you have integrated BCs, then you can buy those foam bloaks that have half moons in them to stop tank roll. But really, with your gear in there and some clothers, it ought to pack well enough to that the tanks won't roll anyways.

The only thing would be the wetsuits being wet after diving...nothing a garbage bag can't contain until you get home to properly wash and store them.

'Course...I'm assuming just weekend trips.

And if nothing else, how about taking out the rear seat (assuming you won't use it, that is)? You'd have loads of space to lay things down that way.

OK. The guys post was asking about a trailer. I don't believed he wanted to be critiqued about the amount of stuff he'll have. If he want's to have a trailer, so be it. Doesn't want all the scubi stuff all over the inside of the car. I believe if the trailer is small enough, it would look fine on the back end. my two cents worth.

It's factory rated for 1,000 pounds. That's fine for a small trailer. Now for the hitch I haven't looked or thought about it yet. A hideaway hitch will probably work.

Martin,
Welcome to the board and it's many opinions.
I'm wondering where you are from since you want to drive your gear to dive sites?
Unfortunately I can't help with the trailer. Mine holds a show Mustang and goes on the back of an Expedition.

Thanks for all these answers, yes indeed I am asking for your opinions on a trailer and not on the storage capacity of the mustang, since I cover a lot of distance of week end diving or 1 week dive trips, and believe me, I got a lot of gear, you have no idea!!! But I appreciate all your insight, thanks to all.

To answer your question, I am based in MOntreal, and I dive in eastern Quebec in the atlantic, and also in fresh water in the area and in Ontario, but, it's out of topic!

I guess I'll go with a hideaway hitch, I wonder what is the capacity for this type of hitch?

cheers !

I have the GT, and I think it would be okay with a trailer. It sure could haul it around fast ! Here is a section out of the owners manual that deals with trailers. Hope it helps.

wow, great info people!

Just an additonal question, does someone know what does tongue load mean? The manula mentions a trailer of up to 1000lbs, and a maximum tongue load of 100lbs...

btw, this trailer will be the fastest in town!

The "tongue" is the part that sticks out of the back of the vehicle that the trailer ball would mount to, the load pressing downward where the ball will mount cannot exceed the specified weight, 100lbs in this case.

What's your second vehicle? It might be a better tower than the Mustang.

Hey Martin,

You may wanna check the following for ideas:

http://www.cargonow.ca/photoGallery.html
http://www.aeroglass.com/trailers/index.php
http://www.precision-fiberglass.com/Trailer.html

(and there are more).

As to the hitch, there are advantages to leaving it exposed (if it looks good, that is).

In the old days we went so far as to mount chromed fake hitches on certain competetion and show cars that were often exposed to the public (sometimes makes sloppy drivers a little nervious about runni8ng into the back of a ride with a trailer hitch on.
