Me and My Stang on a Road Course !

Here are 3 videos of myself taken last summer during a BMW advanced driving school at Le Circuit du Mont-Tremblant north of Montreal:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDMs_t_uK0U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vq86CkqhRQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezJU1nNGm9k

In the second video you see me trying to keep up a 650HP SN95 Cobra ... it feels like I was driving a Civic !!!
Driving this car on a track is so much fun. Can't wait for this summer

In the back stretch, I was doing over 200 km/h (125 mph). Of course I had High Performance brake pads, fluid and I removed the protective back plates to help with the cooling. Altough the 05+ have bigger rotors and ventilated rear rotors compare to SN95, I do not feel any increase in braking power or fading ... the 05+ brakes are so so in my opinion

Sweet!, What did you use to mount the camera? I ran last year on a simular course, going this summer again.
These cars do handle surprisingly well on the road course. Esecially with the suspension you upgraded to gotta be reaaaaaal nice!

What was the outside temp? Have and issues with the temp guage?
Was your gas gauge going nuts? 5 miles to empty and what not?

To mount the camera, I used an ABS drain pipe which I connected to some homemade aluminium brackets. I then removed the close hanger support from the car and mounted the setup. The most expensive part was to buy a camera mount made to attach to rod fixtures. I do not have a picture of the setup in the car but I attached a couple of pictures of my setup. Next year, I will make longer aluminium brackets to bring the camera lower so that the rear view mirror is less in the way.

As for the gauges ... nothing out of the ordinary ... no overheating and no gas gauge going wild. The outside temp was around 85-90F.

It was a 3 day course and I would use a tank a day for about 1h20 of track per day. I think the 05+ on a track drinks a little less than my SN95 I've had in the past

As for the suspension, yes it does make a big difference; this was the whole purpose of buying adjustable shocks; I tried several setups but for a smooth road course like this one I finally ended up dialing the maximum stiffness.

Couple of questions:

What tires were you running?
How does the Eibach/Tokico D-Spec setup work on the track?
Any plans to add sway bars?

I was running my OEM Pirellis for the first 1½ day because I wasn't familiar with the course and my R-Compound were pretty used. My R-Compound are Yokohama 032R Soft in 275/40R17 (They used to be on my 2000 GT).

I will probably get some Toyo RA1 this summer; I had them before and they seemed to be the best for the price/durability/performance.

As far as my suspension, the Eibach Pro-kit/Tokico D-Spec combo permits you to have a soft ride in the winter (around 6-7 turns from the most stiff position), to summer driving (4-5 turns), to autocross (2-3 turns) to finally road course settings (0-2 turns). You always want the back to be softer especially for autocross because of brisk side to side weight transfer; this is particular due to the solid rear-axle . I which this car had IRS

I do not know if I will change the sway bars. I will participate in more road course training and lapping events this summer and I will see. I think the spring/shocks combo has had a greater impact on the suspension that the sway bars would but there always room for improvement !!

Nice videos and loved hearing that Cobra supercharger whine as he went by. That looks to be a fairly fast course. What are the total miles of the layout and do you have a link to the course. It looks like you were holding your own with some pretty fast cars! I can't wait to get back to the local course now that I have better suspension and brakes.

Thanks Rich !

Here's a link to the track's web site: http://www.lecircuit.com/en/track.htm

I saw on another post of yours that you had new rotors with Hawk HPS pads. If you decide to do some track, I suggest you get at least some HP+ but I would go for some Hawk Blue; the HPS won't last the day. I had some GranSport GS3 (equivalent to Hawk Blue) in the front and GranSport GS5 (equivalent to Hawk HP+) in the rear with some Motul 600 brake fluid. I had zero brake fade the whole 3 days !

As for the rotors, I need to replace them and I was looking at the same as yours. I know they will be good for the street but I wonder how they are going to hold on the track; it's a really good price for some slotted & drilled rotors. Have you had a chance to try them on a track ?

My HPS pads lasted the day, and still on 7,000 miles later.

Hawk HPS and HP+ SHOULDN'T be used on a road course. I'll try to dig up the post on corner-carvers.com.

HP+ in the rear are fine. The Mustang is so nose heavy that the rear brakes are not that much solicitated. In typical lapping and advanced driving schools, you usually have 20 min sessions and a course like the one you see in my vids has some long parts with no or light braking permiting them to cool down.

I haven't tracked my car since the new pads and rotors. I doubt that I have enough talent to ruin either one over the course of the day.

Glad to see someone else road course their Mustang.
Yeah, the Soft 032Rs don't last very long, especially with such a heavy car. Used them on an 88 Audi Quattro 80 set-up for track. Would get about six or so track days out of them if I rotated them religiously. A lot of the guys in my HPD club use the RA1s for the same reasons.

Fantastic Vids by the way!

Wow. Nice.

Factory Shifter?

What kind of Porshe was that in the first video? That thing was moving.

Was that the rear end whine at high speed or just the transmission winding out?

Very cool,

The course at Mount Tremblant is really good from what I hear (didn't they used to run F1 there?). I would like to drive it eventually.

Yes factory shifter with factory final drive ...

The Porsche was a 911 (Turbo) I think. BTW, I was really moving when he passed me because I slowed down to let him pass. A 911 with that power is unfortunately no match for a Stang ...

The whine is due to my R-Compound tires ... just look at the thread on those tires and you'll understand why !!!
