Best approach for your first insurance on a car is to shop around. Get quotes from the agencies and go with the cheapest. I'm with State Farm and they are one of the few that will take younger drivers without totally killing them. They salvaged me and my spotty driving record and now I'm paying decent rates.

I am 41, live near St. Louis, and only pay $250 every six months for my 10 year old S10 (full coverage), but my insurance company (Country Companies) wants $850 every six months for an '05 GT Mustang! I am going to check around, but I can't imagine what a 17 year old will have to pay! I tried to get a GT Mustang back when I was 23, and my insurance company at the time (American Family) just said "NO"! :notnice: They wouldn't insure me at any cost, and I didn't have tickets or claims! Good luck guys...

tell you what, that is a major speeding ticket...

at 17, you will be paying a HUGE insurance bill, sorry to bear the bad news

Try and do a little insurance swticharro, have one of your parents be primary driver on the Mustang and you on the generic family sedan. That is about the best you can do.

Because you are 17, speeding ticket or not, you will have a huge insurance bill on any car you own, let alone a Mustang.

I have a clean record and before my 25th birthday (when rates drop in Ontario), I would have paid $5500 for a Mustang GT, now it is "only" $3000 (all figures in monopoly money)

Don't you and your parents get a discount if your on their insurance? I know when I was on my parents insurance I had dirt cheap insurance. Plus my parents got an additional car discount.

Yeah I remember when I was the age the young members here. It's tough getting insurance on a mustang when your young. these insurance consider young male a very high risk. when I bought my new 1989 mustang gt, I took out a private loan to avoid paying collision which made insurance cheap. I never got into any accidents but looking back it probably wasn't the best idea. I know for a fact that some insurance companies don't even want to insure young males who drive sports cars. Or ,some companies make the rates so high that you can't afford it. When I bought my second mustang in my early 20's I had state farm. The prices were a little high( as expected) but as soon as I got my first speeding ticket, I got a cancelation notice due to the ticket. So beware to all you younger mustang owners. if you get a low price with a major company,They might drop you if you get a ticket. Stay clean if possible!!!

For younger people, I would recommend AAA. They are NOT the most competitve for adults, but for younger adults, they are great. If you have above a 3.0 GPA, you save like 600 bucks instantly. You can save a lot with them. Go over and try to work it out with them.

I recommend going in person to several local insurance agents and tell them you are shopping around for the best rate. If you call their 1-800-AND -WAIT number you will be asked a LOT of questions. Plus, when they do it over the phone, they do a credit check on you (without your knowledge). Too any credit inquiries looks bad on your credit. :notnice:

Good Luck!

Get married :-). When I was 18 I had an LX 5.0 and it was 1200/6 months. Actually, I'd go shop around with all of the big ones like State Farm, Progressive, Geico, etc... Your parents plan would be the cheapest most likely.
