Loud ticking on top of motor

I have a 2009 mustang 4.0 v6. When I got home from work yesterday there was a very loud ticking/knocking sound. I opened the hood and it sounds like its coming from the intake, but could possibly be the valve covers. It increases with rpm's. Will not accelerate over 4000 rpm. Anyone experience this problem??? It has 130 thousand miles. I thought it was a pully at first. Took the belt off and still knocking.

You'll need stethoscope to pinpoint it further. It could be a cracked intake. Or it could be a loud/messed up injector. Or it could be a cam follower or lash adjuster. Or bearings for the cams or jackshaft. Or the timing chain/guide is shot.

Perhaps post a link to a video of your noise would be in order. There's all kinds of possibles here.

I took the valve cover off (drivers side) and the timing chain guide is hitting the timing chain. Not sure what caused it, but more than I have the time for. So on its way to the shop!! Thank you for your response!!! Have a blessed day!!!

Yup, I was slightly afeared of that after seeing some of them youtubes out there. But hey, it's been caught and you're on the way to fixed, right?

It happens from time to time (heh), these guides do wear out for various reasons. Mine did, fixing that was epic. I'm sure it's better on your engine than mine was, though.

Glad to be of service, hope it works out well for ya!

Getting a new motor. Found out that to replace the chain(s), yes both of them. There is one in the front and back. But its just as easy to replace the motor. Labor!!! Wish I had the time to just do it myself. However, bright side, twin turbo???? Lol thanks for all the replies!!!

Indeed, the timing chains on these S197s, depending on the year, will pretty much total the car. The engine+labor to replace mine was enough that if it was a body shop claim, it would indeed have put her out to pasture. Which siphons with a large amount of negative pressure, because it's *just* timing chains, right?

Wrong, oh so wrong. And worse on the 4.0 V6 with the jack shaft and rear right chain. Just... engineers. Gotta love 'em. At least on the 4.6 it's all up front, if a bit complicated.

And yes, twin turbos. Do it.
