LED 3rd Brake Light

Has anyone installed an LED 3rd brake light like the one in the link. How does it look? If you have pix, please post.

BTW, has anyone ever wondered why car manufactures consider LED lighting a luxury, offered as an option on some cars. Isn't the whole point of LED lighting that its really cheap and saves energy at the same time. I mean, you can buy a 100 strand set of LED Christmas lights at Target for under $15.

An led can be cheap and last like 60hours, or expensive like whelens and be guaranteed for 5 yrs and 100,000 hours, good leds are not cheap, my TIR 6 blues in the grille go for $140 each and its only 6 led's in each. Like anything else you want to do your research first and remember you get what you pay for.

If you're looking for a LED 3rd brake light, I know CDC makes one for people interested in their ducktail spoilers. That spoiler mounts over the factory brake light. So this light provides an alternative to going without a 3rd brake light.

Hope that helps.

Yeah I think I paid around $60 or so shipped. What amazed me is that it was shipped from California on a Monday, and it showed up in Tampa on Wednesday (2 days!) via USPS

This looks like the APC light that I have. It works great! Gets rid of that "burned out" look that the stock third light has. Easy to install too, and you never have to worry about burned out bulbs again.

Also, if you don't like the "clear" strip in the center the lens pops off and is interchangeable with the stock light fixture's lens.

BE WARNED! This light (if it's like the APC one) will *not* work on 2007+ 'Stangs without a resistor, even though it plugs right in. Without the resistor the third brake light will be on dimly until the SJB shuts it off approximately 1/2 hour later.

Apparently Eagle Eyes, who produced the red with clear center light sold by APC before they went under is now making a smoked version...basically the same light with a different lens.

See MRKABC's post above.....unless the smoked version has been "fixed" for '07 applications a resistor is required....after much back and forth with MRKABC and others this is what I had to do to get rid of the barely detectable "low glow". So far it has worked perfectly, about 6 months now.

How much are you asking? Do you have pics of it installed on your car?

I got the APC one and swapped out my stock lens. If you ask me they should have used and LED one there from the factory. My bulb blew two months after I got the car.

I'll post a pic of my smoked one from IPCW tomorrow. Because mine is an '07, I also had the problem with it constantly glowing. IPCW provided me with a resistor and no problems since then. I'm thinking I like the stock look better, so I may go with the APC unit and swap the stock red lens on it.

I don't know which model... got it off of ebay a while ago. No write up necessary, I ran a pair of wires to the factory 3rd brake light, cut them and spliced. I mounted the light inside of the rear window w/ a 3M product called Window Weld. It's the adhesive that your windshield is held in place with. Tucked the wires under the headliner and walla!

Here is what the third brake light looks like during the day:

How about at night:

And HERE is what the stock light fixture looked like after being removed from my car. Note the bulb is full of carbon! Looks like it was about to burn out, and only a year old! The stock light fixture sucks!

If they make a smoked one I'd be all for it. I am in no way a fan of LED tail lights, but our 3rd brake light looks like a bulb is burned out from some angles.
