I'm a little confused. How do the Interior Upgrade and the Side Airbag correlate?

IS IT
If you want the side air, you have to get the interior upgrade?
OR....
If you want the interior upgrade, you have to the side airbag?

My interpretation is you can get the int upgrade w/o the side air, but you can't get the side air w/o the int upgrade. correct me if im wrong

I want the interior upgrade w/o the side airbag but wasn't sure if it was possible

That is correct.

In order to the side airbags you must have the IUP on the car.

You can get the IUP without side airbags, they are another option seperate, but only qualify when IUP is selected.

That is pretty unethical! They require you to order an expensive cosmetic upgrade in order to get an important safety feature? I would still like to get the IUP, but Ford should make the side airbags a standalone option!

With the IUP, a different door insert is put into the doors, which i believe is why side air bags require the IUP. It's an option on top of an option, and until 2006-2007 when side impact airbags became required in cars, Ford is not giving away anything it can make a buck on. The one hesitation i have is whether or not to order the side impact, im leaning towards no, but im not sure, i am gettin IUP however.

I'm only getting the Side Airbags because it'll be a small benefit towards my insurance, with which I'll be needing all the decreases I can get ('spose you can put added safety on the plusses too, heh).

Its not unethical at all. The standard package just doesn't have the space for the airbags. They will only fit in the IUP doors.

Like I've said in other threads: get them. There is a reason they will be required in 06-07

You're absolutely right on this one, can't mess around with security, that's something they'll probably offer the next year anyway's, as usual.....That's why i think it's always better to wait for the next year production. They did the same thing when i bought my Tribute from Mazda, i got it the first year without the possibility of getting independant headrest and electric lumbar adjustment, and then the next year it was a standard option. :notnice:

How much weight do you think the side airbag will add to the car (i.e. slow it down)

I wouldn't worry about weight, it won't make a difference on the 1/4 for sure.

Its to keep variants in check, and costs down.

IMO side airbags are an option (since they are not standard yet) that everyone should consider if purchasing a new Mustang with the IUP. So many car accident fatalities are caused by side impact collisions that cause the driver's or passenger's head to smash against the side window. The side air bags should protect the head in these situations, so getting them as an option is a no brainer to me.

Ford should offer them standard for '05, but since they are only being offered as an option right now, I feel it is a very wise investment for your own safety. Don't worry about weight, the car will still perform incredibly and you won't even notice the difference in weight. B)

the link may also come from the fact that the IUP has the message center...

I was under the impression that the side airbags would be in the seats, as they are in my RSX. In fact, most cars I have seen with side airbags have them in the seats, not the doors. If this is the case, I don't know what the IUP would have to do with side airbags. What steve19970 said though could hold some weight - maybe the message center has something to do with it.

I for some reason am not a fan of all these airbags...

IMO, part of the reason insurance rates have gone up is because you of the cost of replacing those buggers. One blown airbag adds about $1500 to the insurance estimates, and there are plenty of times an airbag blows in minor fender bender rendering the car a write-off.

I will take my chances without the side airbag. I am sure the door beams and stiffer body structure will keep me adequately protected. Hopefully I will never need them.

There is only so much "safety equipment" you can put in a car and still be hurt in an accident.

There have been many cases of people getting seriously hurt when the airbag deployed late/early in minor fender-benders. I think too much attention is being paid to safety equipment and not enough to safe driving techniques.
