Insurance for 'Stangs?

I'm curious what everyone is paying for insurance. If you don't wish to reveal that information, then please don't. But if you do, please list your age, maritial status, vehicle, and insurance provider.

I'm a 23 year old single male. I pay nearly $180 a month for my 2002 Mustang (V6). I've got 100/300 coverage, which may be too much... but well, my dad recommended that much. I go through Cumberland Insurance Group, which is just a local carrier in Tennessee.

Insurance cost is a very tough subject to discuss on a web forum. The reason being is insurance cost can differ drastically from state to state, city to city and even one insurance company to another for the very same city and same person calling for quotes. Moving across the street could save you hundreds or cost you hundreds more.

You could call around to other insurance companies and get prices from $70 a month to $170 a month for the same coverage’s it just depends on the insurance company. Also another leading factor in insurance cost is your credit score. If you have a low credit score you will usually pay a higher premium then you would if you had a high credit score.

While you might get some ideas what others pay it will really do you no good. About the only way you could compare insurance cost is to call insurance companies located in your area. Call the big names like State Farm, Farmers, All State etc as well as some of the web type insurance companies like Gecko (sp?).

Best bet is to always stay with a well established insurance company and not some neighborhood business or some of the companies that don’t have an office anywhere near you. While they may save you a few bucks they may not be there when you need them most. Trust me I learned the hard way trying to save some money when I was younger just to see some of them go bankrupt and lose all the money I had paid in while not actually being covered…

I'm paying $1900 per year with Amica for the 2007 Mustang GT vert and my wife's 2004 Lexus RX330. I have one accident on file from two years ago, my wife's license is squeaky clean, and we're both in our low 40s.

We saw a $1000 DECREASE last year and, believe it or not, the cost for my policy went DOWN by $4 per year (on an annual adjusted basis, so it is a real decrease) this year when I traded my '02 GT coupe for the '07 vert (same daily usage, same policy coverage).

Belive it or not, it looks like the convertibles cost less to insure than the coupes. I was thumbing through and insurance cost file at my dealer last week and under a category of "sports cars" or maybe it was "coupes", the "cost to insure" index for the 'vert is 69 while the coupe was like 139! I think the average for the category was around 145.

So bottom line is, while the cost to insure is dependent on your age and driving record, the insurance cost for a coupe should be about average for the segment, and the 'verts should be less. Given that I'm insuring a 4 year newer and more expensive car for LESS money than I was paying previously, the logic seems to follow (at least in my case).

When I first got my 06 GT I was quoted $2300 by State Farm with $100 deductible. I raised the deductible to $1000 and now I pay $1400 a year. I don't like the high deductible, but it didn't make sense to spend $900 a year to keep the $100 dollar deductible. When I asked my agent about the difference he told me that insurance companies are trying to get away from paying so many small claims.

50 years old.......Full coverage through FARMERS @ $980 per year.......I fully expect that # to go down this year, since I have a perfect driving record and the 'Stang will be older too

Sonic,

I was always confused on why my credit score is used to determine the rate that I'm going to pay for my car insurance. Wouldn't you think that a claim history would be better proof of how much you should be charged? For your car insurance?

I don't think that a credit score should be totally ignored, because an insurance company should know if a perspective client defaulted on a prior insurance company. But why should someone with a low credit score with no claims/tickets be punished with a higher premium?

If anything, at least in Philadelphia, it puts more uninsured drivers on the road.

In the state of TN if you are a male under the age of 25, you are considered a youthful driver and will pay higher rates. When you hit 25 you get a big break on your insurance. Also, your insurance decreases again at the age of 30, if you're still single, but not as much as the break at 25.

Another point to consider is that some of the quotes given in this topic are for policies with multiple cars. If I add another car to my policy, the entire policy will drop about 20% due to the multiple car discount.

Most companies also offer not only multi-car discounts, but also discounts if you a.) have your home owners through them, b.) pay in full and c.) set up an automatic payment plan from your bank account.

I just moved to El Paso from NC and my insurance jumped $200 for the year. My record is clean and no claims since being with USAA for 12 years. Also have my homeowner's insurance with them. Looks like my insurance coverage and vehicle spread is very similar to GreyGt.

I really would like to find some cheaper insurance. Ive been with progresive since I started drive at 16 through my family. But paying over 2,400 a year is a bit much expecially considering the car is paid for, no loan. And I havent had a ticket in over 3 year and I have never had a accident or claim.

Check a Broker

FireFighter - I have to assume you're 25 or under at that price (2400+).

I don't know if an auto insurance broker can help you but it's worth
a try. Check the Yellow pages....I was told to go to this Chubb insurance
but the goof at work didn't know it was for people who have $75K or more
priced cars. As it turned out though I was talking with a broker and he
was able to set me up with Travellers Insurance.

As someone said before some of the inusrance companies look at
the credit score....and being under 26 simply means you haven't had
credit as long as us middle-aged folks.
