It all depends on the lender. I went through this bit a couple of years ago. My daughter-in-law wanted a new car and wanted to get the 0% interest for 60 months deal that was available at the time. She could qualify for the loan, but not the 0% rate. I co-signed so she could get the 0% rate. The car was financed through Mazda and initially they insisted that my name go on the title and registation. However, I did not want my name on the title or the registration because I did not want to be identified as a "part" owner. I have significant assets and did not want to be included in any lawsuit that might result from any accident she might have. Anyway - it took a bit of doing and a couple of phone calls to Mazda finance to get things straightened out, but ultimately, I am a co-signer, but my name is not on the title or registration. Don't know if my answer helped or not, but it is possible to keep the co-signers name off of the title.

In NY anyway, the vehicle can be titled or registered to either the buyer OR co-buyer OR both.
