Impressed with MPG's...

So I decided to drive up to my parent's house in Lehighton, PA which is about 72 miles from my house in Philly. I took the Northeast Extension going up and I was averaging about 70mph they whole way and averaged about 24mpg's with cruise control off, A/C off and the windows down. On the way back to Philly tonight, I threw on the CC and left it on 55, had the A/C off and had the windows down. I was stunned. I averaged 32 MPG's!!!!! I even rest the CPU a few times, just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. Typically, I notice increase in MPG when going south on the Northeast Extension because the majority of it is downhill, but 32mpgs with a V8 motor that also a 93 Race tune is unbelievable.

The key word in your whole post was at the end. TUNE. Your engine and computers are in perfect sync. I'm averaging 28 with my V-8. And luvin' it.

My 05 GT is running rich. I know this because when I start the car I get excess smoke coming out of the tail pipes. Same thing when I stop on it. Yet, I get better gas mileage in it than I do my 97 Grand AM 6 cylinder. Go figure.

32 to 33 mpg Edmonton, Alberta to Pentiction, B.C. July 15-26. Gas mileage is very good considering there is a lot of hilly terrain on the trip.

That's great!

The best I've seen was coming from just north of Columbus, OH back home to South Jersey. Doing the speed limit +4 with the A/C on the whole way I avg'd 29.2 mpg.

The key is to drive at a slow speed. 55 MPH is the legal minimum for most MI highways, and 70 MPH is the limit on the same roads. While cruising at 70 MPH, I noticed my MPG is around 24-25 MPG w/ the A/C running. I can't complain since my Crown Vic barely hits 19-20 MPG in the same conditions.

If they lower the national speed limit to 55 MPH, I'll be able to see the near-30 MPG that everyone reports. The key is to keep the RPMs low while cruising. I'm at 2000-2100 RPM in 5th gear at 70 MPH.

My 2000 Crown Vic is at around 2700 RPM in OD at 80 MPH!

Guess I should force myself to try a reduced speed trip, but honestly around here people that do the speedlimit are hazards on the road. Also does not help that it's relatively hilly and I have 4.10's.

I believe it, I can get 28 mpg on the highway if I keep it at a steady 60 mph and 23-24 mpg if I do between 75-80 mph. It drops to about 18 mpg in the city driving.

god, i dont know how you guys do it. maybe my car is just a dud.

normally i got 6-10mpg around the city because my right foot is made of depleted uranium, but recently i've been trying to see how much mpg i can get through self control.

i've been struggling the last few days to make 15mpg around the city. i'm accellerating at the pace of normal traffic or even slower (!!!) and i end up with 10-13mpg. 14mpg if there arealot of green's and coasting. (fyi, this is with resetting the MPG meter while i am parked, and then measuring ONLY my around-town MPG.. never exceeding 55mph). do you guys with your amazing highway mpg's have similar results? or can you actually get 15mpg+ on local roads? (resetting mpg gauge while parked)

I average anywhere from 21-24 mixed daily. When driving to work the speed limit is 55 so I stick to that unless I'm late.

The guys that are getting 26-27 highway are all from flat land country.

I'm right w/ you. Since my car is just for fun I romp on it. However, when I first got it and drove it to work,I never got better than 16

to and from work, I average 17-19, because Miami traffic SUCKS going south.
On the highway drive to my fiance, I always reset the MPG avg, and I usually get anywhere from 21-29MPG, depending on how much I'm romping on the gas
I've noticed the sweet MPG range for these cars on the highway is around 55-75 in 5th gear on the 3.55 gears. Use the MPG rating thingy screen on the car to see how you're doing on MPG with the amount of gas you're giving it. I've found that I subconsciously drive more efficiently when I have that thing staring at me

MPG computer

I see 28-30 on the computer at 65mph, but am curious about how accurate the readout is. How exactly does it determine mpg? Is it just based on fuel flow, or is it some combination of that and throttle position/vacuum, engine load, or what?

I just drove back to Illinois from Mustangweek in South Carolina. 1050 miles, loaded with stuff, through the Smoky Mountains with the A/C on and I averaged 25.6 MPG. I'm very happy with that.
