I'm sure this has been asked many times before.

What mileage do I need to take the new GT in for her first oil change? A lady from the service department at the dealership says 5,000 miles. I've never, ever gone that lone for the very first oil change. I'm thinking more like 1,500 miles? What is your recommendation?

I would say 1,500 is a good start. Some like to do it at 500, some 1,000...whatever. 1,500 is reasonable. Heck, even waiting for 5,000 is probably ok, and your engine would still probably outlast the car.

I just noticed the V-8 requires a different oil weight than the V-6. The 4.6 uses 5W - 20W and the V-6 uses 5W - 30W. Whats the deal with that?

I'm taking her in at 1,000 miles. I am at 800 right now. 5,000 seems WAY to long - wouldn't there be machining and assembly debris in the original oil?

There might be a little, but anything that would be big enough to cause a major problem would all get caught in the filter anyway. It's the little tiny stuff that would make it past the filter that worries me.

I heard that the bearing tolerance is so tight on the GT that it requires the lower weight oil in order to get in there?

Feel free to take it at whatever mileage leaves you feeling comfortable.

I have followed the factory schedule, with changes every 5k miles. She has over 30k miles on her now, and still runs like a champ.

I think the ford engineers are pretty smart when it comes to oil change interval with the oil they recommend using.

I put Mobil1 synthetic in mine at 1,600 and it seems to run smoother then just before the change. Recommended!

I had the dealer change my oil/filter the day I picked her up. The manual gives you the option of months or miles. Since my car had been sitting on the lot almost 6 months, and only had 16 miles on it, I had them do a change (it was a free service), as I was leaving on a 1200 mile trip the next day.

I now have almost 6000 miles on her, and did the second change at 4500. Most of my driving is highway (75), and she has never used a drop of oil. This change will be Mobil One, which I have been using since 1979.

Mne was 210 cause i had 190 on it before the first snow, then it went away for winter. I didn't want to not change it after winter. my second was at 1500, and after that its been about every 1500.

My dealership offers/recommends a free oil change at 1000 miles.

I changed my oil at 670 (plan was to change at 600).

When your engine is new, no matter how well its been manufactured, you're still going to have rough surfaces rubbing against each other and shaving off bits and pieces of metal as you break it in. Most of that will get caught in the filter if it's doing its job, but the rest will float around in your oil and I imagine it turning into liquid sand paper, wearing down on your parts extra hard every time anything moves.

I'm sure your car will be fine if you don't change your oil until Ford recommends you to, but it gave me piece of mind & a clean feeling to change it right after the break-in. (Heck, alot of people don't even believe in break-in and they're fine)

I wouldn't/didn't go to 5k on my first either. I also think thats kinda long on a new engine. The second change I would go to about 8k or once a year with mobil one.

1000 for the first two changes, then 3000, then every 5000. But you'll be fine if you wait to 5000 forthe first one, Ford is good about that.

Did my first one at 1,500 miles, then 4,500 miles and every 3,000 miles thereafter...just "old school." I change the oil/filter in all of my vehicles...I trust no one else. Many years ago a dealership overfilled one of my Camaros and it later caused problems for me. Besides, if you allow the dealer, Jiffy Lube, etc., to do it you risk them under/over tightening your drain plug and/or oil filter. Do it yourself and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you did it right.

You can pick up the Motorcraft Oil filter (need 6 qts with filter change) at a lot of auto places and the 5w-20 Motorcraft Semi-synthetic is availabe at Wal-Mart. The oil and filter change on the Stang is very easy...just use ramps to make it easier (drain plug requires a 16mm wrench). Stick with the recommended oil. The semi-synthetic holds up very well.
Good luck!

I changed it at 1300 miles (Royal Purple...before I knew better), then every 4000 w/Mobil 1. The manual says 5000, convention says 3000, but since it is Mobil 1, I figure every 4000 is OK.

BTW, I buy the 5quart bottle of M1 +1 qt at Walmart for like $34, and the Motocraft filter for $3.5, and the dealership changes the oil out (while I stand and watch) for $7.95...

why are some of you guys changing the oil so early? ex, 500, 1500? Is it better for the car for the first oil change or something?
