Plus turbo power in a small engine...icky. I've been living that grossness for a year.
The current base price of a 350Z starts at $26.5k which is right at what a well equipped GT will cost. You option that 350Z to match the features on the GT and it will be close if not more than $30K.

It is better than my 1996 Volvo 850R with 227hp turbo charged V5 that requires premium gas and gets 18 MPG.

I am looking forward to a 300HP car that gets over 20MPG, uses regular unleaded and has no turbo lag. It will be faster and cheaper for me to operate.

If a stock Stang GT with 300hp isn't good enough for you, I think you're in the wrong forum. This is the most easily accessible 300hp car on the market. Most people will never drive a car with that much power, let alone own one. I say be happy with it.

If you want something better, the SE's will blow the GT's out of the water.

Neon SRT4 - 21k (minimum with no packages), 220hp not 270...
Still a neon...still not 300hp for 26k

Magnum RT 30k (minimum with no packages), 340hp for 4,000 more.
again, not a 300hp 26,000 car.

GTO with LS1 is 32.5k (8,500 dollars more... for a car with 50 more hp)
Pricing is not out for an Ls2, even if its in the same range...its still 8,500 more.

Charger with 6.1 hemi (however a 300C with a 5.7 hemi costs 33k)
it WILL be more expensive

Our point is...cheap horsepower...NO comparison....yet
The SRT-4 is currently dynoing 235 RWHP bone stock which works out to be around 265-270. And at $20K or $21K it'll be running right next to the new GT if it's only packing 300. Plus it's got factory warrantied packages to take it deep into the 12s.

Now the reason I made the poll is because I had made arguement on another site that the stang crowd would be dissappointed if the GT only made 300. But I guess I was wrong. There is a big difference between the Camaro and Mustang crowd. Nothing wrong with it, but over at CamaroZ28.com, factory performance is the number 1 deal with the next Camaro. It's "gotta have" >350hp for the base V8 and the Z/28's gotta have >400hp for around $30K (Some even insist that it has to beat the next Cobra). Otherwise it's no deal for those guys.

Interesting

According to Dodge's FAQ about the stage 2 upgrade for the SRT-4, it is not street legal or covered by the factory warranty on your SRT-4.

I don't know how many horsey are in my cavalier but it's only a 2.4litre.

I think 300 will be plenty.

This is the first time I saw this thread. "Only" 300hp??? My 97 with the mods I've done is maybe 240hp and I can get in alot of trouble with that. People just don't appreciate a good thing when it's slammed into their faces. So sad.

If I remember correctly, my old Cav 2.4 had 130 - 140 hp.

I'll be happy to sell my supercharged 96GT for $25,999. It's only got 48,000 miles and it has 267 rwhp which should put it at around 304hp at the crank............................

My current car is a 4 banger, and has a bhp of 115...

So, yeah, double the cylinders and three times the power....lets do the math and only about $6K more, too...

You have to forgive my skepticism, but this seems highly unlikely. The SRT-4 was tweaked to 230hp and 250 lbs for 2004 and that sounds fairly consistent with it's numbers. This car sees 5.4-5.8 second sprints to 60 in most mags and is LUCKY to bust into the 13s. 270hp in a car that light and I think we'd be seeing mid 13s and 5 second sprints. Besides, how can it be making ANY RWHP, as I thought it was based on a fwd Neon.

I any event, I don't think think many would consider a blown, front drive, four dour economy box to be a primary stang competitor. Not saying I don't have tremendous respect for the car's abilities , I just think it's a different market, much like the rally (WRX, EVO) crowd...

I believe Boomer's point stands. Since the demise of the f-body there simply are no more 25K 300+hp cars floating around...

I love 300 stock but a ? the Mach 1 is rated 305-310 stock what does it really make? Cobra 390 rated what does it really make. Percentage difference of both. add to 05 What do you get?

Agree. Based on the skill levels of drivers I see every morning on the ride to work, 300HP is probably more than the "average" driver can safely handle.

Plus...this just in...unless you fly F-22s everyday, someone out there is always gonna have more power. And guys in 400HP Porsches are just as capable of blocking the left lane and doing 55MPH.

I agree.
Stock the SRT4 (before bump) was an 04 Mustang GT competitor.
The new GT will trounce it.

Also keep in mind, HP numbers don't tell the whole story...including where it comes in and the EVER so important TORQUE that people seem to forget!

Also as for the Z28 guys...no offense to them...if their (and I use that lightly, as I'm sure its not all of them) sole purpose is HP, and it beating a Mustang GT....just look at what happened last time.

I shouldn't have to say that even the Z28s/Formula's with base LS1 were wiping the floor of Mustang GTs, yet mustangs outsold them 2 to 1.

Guess HP isn't everything.

And also remember the GT is a blessing.
V6s are what make the GT possible.
GM has to learn that about the F-bodies.

Boomer that is well put..

Horsepower is nice, but the car needs to be the total package.

Z28's and SS's were stickering close to and over $40K (canadian) and yet they still had the catalytic converter hump and doors that rattled like a beat up used car.
