I WANT A GT!
I would ask:
Why do you want a GT? Personally, just saying you want it, and go get it sounds a bit spoiled. IMO
My answer to the question of why did I want one:
First and foremost, because I have always loved the classic stangs, and when I saw the concept of the 05... well, it just gave me goosebumps. Some of the feeling is unexplainable.
Also, because I had been driving a Mustang, that was a gift from my husband on our First Valentines day as a married couple and I loved that car. When I test drove it, I knew at that moment I would always own a Mustang. That was in 99.
Because I love the sound of the V8. Because I love the way it gives a salute to the classics, yet is a classic all on its own.
Because I know from driving for 20 years, I can get behind the wheel of it, open it up some, smoke the tires to smell the rubber... feel the car respond the way it should to each move I make. Because in this car, driving is a dance... like a perfect ballet.
So, why do YOU want a GT?

So, why do YOU want a GT?

I want a Lambo, and I'm older than you. But, I know that I can't afford it.
Now, if I'm in your shoes, I'd take a look at what I could afford and call my insurance agent and find out what the cost of insuring a 16 year old on a Mustang GT will be. My guess is that it will be a lot more than the payment on the car itself.
Wait another 5 years and then come back for our opinion.
I don't care whether he or his parents can afford the car and the insurance.
I care about how he'd drive on the road.
High school boys tend to be showboats and reckless. It becomes all about the adrenalin rush and trying to impress other people. I was one of them. I managed to be that way in a 70HP Chevette. I did alot of stupid stuff in it. Thank God I didn't have a car with more power, I'd probably have seriously injured myself, caused serious property damage or worse.
I'm of the opinion that new drivers need an easily controllable, low powered car until they mature and get more experience behind the wheel.
May I also say that people who get something given to them also tend to not care about what was given to them as much. This invites even more wrecklessness. There's a world of difference on how someone treats something when it was given to him compared to if he worked for it.

I have to agree....we bought for our daughter at 15 a Toyota Celica....but not the GT...and now at 18 we have ordered a GT convertible.....but she has not had any tickets or fender benders and has proven herself to be responsible. And she knows if she gets a speeding ticket that baby is gone!

Man, if you are only 15 and can afford a GT on your own money, not stuff that has been given to you I will be soooooo jealous I will kill myself. Not really, I'll just go for a ride in my GT and still scratch my head as to how you can afford one

well im pretty close to his age, 18. im buying it all myself. i definitely appreciate this thing alot more already even tho i dont have it yet.
i was able to afford my very first Mustang, but it was a V6, cause it was all I could afford and on insurance too in NJ. Cost me about 20, but I was workin my butt off and driving around junkers, i went from a 91 Mazda Protege to a 98 Grand Am GT used. I was never a big money spender cause I really didnt care to buy anything with the money, so I constantly saved it. They were both nice cars but I needed something to last me through college and everything. So I bought the V6 stang, so from 15 yrs old to 19, thats 4 years savin, working non stop mon-fri, but it payed off in the end.........
For those who get cars from mommy and daddy, u ought to buy your own cause u'll never learn in the end on how life is when it comes to buying a car. Mommy and daddy aren't gonna be there forever, its a lesson I learned at 16 and I learned very well. Yea I'm 21 and i still get cr@p from people thinking that my parents bought me the 05 Mustang, but when i show them all my papers with my name in (title, reg, insurance) it and all the payments made with checks in my name, then they shut up!

since i valet ive had the oppertunity to drive plenty of powerful cars and the test drives of the 05 i knew the car was powerful but i was able to handle it and wasnt overwhelmed. not bashing u older guys but some of us young guns arent all crazy drivers. havent gotten speeding ticket yet (knocking on wood) but the power is NOT overwhelming. my parents have an excursion....v10 6 liter 320 hp.....torque WOW.....soo im used to it. this is a sports car i know but since ive driven it....total for like 1 hour.....im fine with it

I'm assuming this is your only (or at least first) child?
Guaranteed....she will have an accident or a ticket before she hits 20. You're only hope is that she's not hurt. Wait till you see your insurance bill, then. If you think it's bad now, just wait......

no tickets or accidents, and i'm 21 (knock on wood)
Look... I am buying a GT, but I am an old man. This is my third 'stang and I have always had rear drive. But, I have also driven the V6 and 210 hp is no slouch. I think that would be a fun car, get the attention a 16 year old high school kid is looking for, and would be a car you could learn how to handle pretty well.
My first 'stang (when I was in High School and I bought with my own cash) was a 1966 coupe with a Sprint 200 (in-line 6). Fun car. I could bust the tires loose when I wanted. I also could afford to keep the gas tank full.
If you get an '05, I would go with the V6. It's a blast. Have your parents go rent one from Avis or Hertz and check it out.

Would any insurance company in their right mind give a 16 yearold (probably with about a month of driving experience) insurance? I'd hate to see the monthly payments for that !
I'm 24 with a minor at-fault which recently came off my record and I'm going to pay about $150 a month for a V6!

A responsible parent would not hand a car like this to a 16 year old for a number of reasons.
First and most important, as much as we LOVE our babies, they are downright DANGEROUS. The cars ability to exceed 140 will be exercised by young, fearless people who are given the opportunity. I don't care if they're male or female, if they have the car, get the challenge and can do it, they will. Let's not even factor in a Mustangs ability to severely bite you in adverse weather conditions unless you're very experienced.
Second, surely a 16 year old is unable to afford this car on their own. The money was either allotted to them through some situation or they are just being handed a $28,000 vehicle. American children are way too spoiled. They need to begin to learn what it means to work for something. Handing a brand new driver a brand new $28,000 vehicle that could potentially kill them or someone else is not a good lesson for someone this age.
No matter how you slice this deal, it's not a good idea. Sorry to say, you should get some more experience and years under your belt before having a vehicle of this nature.

I just want to say that if you are smart with your money like I am, then at your age don't buy that car! When i was 18 i started my own business and became suscessful really fast. My first car was a brand new Protege5. I did all the "souping it up" you can do to it. Then I sold it and bought a 2005 Canyon. Now after I have learned to drive rear wheel drive (even though it was a truck) you learn to appreciate those types of vehicles...So i will agree with people that mentioned it already..by a front wheel drive car and work your way up to rear wheel. If not I can see nothing but bad coming out of you buying a GT or all cars!
again just my 2 cents
again just my 2 cents

This is our 2nd child...first is a 21 year old son...no accident or speeding ticket either! (Of course.....saying this....he could be getting one this instance! Lol)
And yes I pray they will not be in an accident or get hurt. Every parent must decide what is right for their child! I bought my own first car (3year old Ford Pinto) when I was out of high school....my husband was given a new car for graduation.....he probably appreciates things better than I do....go figure!

I wish you and your kids all the best in the world. You know what's best.
Personally, I've always been of the mind that no kid has the knowledge, the ambition, nor the attitude to be successful if too much is given to them. That's not a knock....just what I've always felt.
Truth is, my son is 19 (only child). He's working to help pay for his college, his car (a hyundai he bought himself), his insurance and his gas. He lives at home with me (which is OK) because he can't afford to live on his own.
I can tell you he takes care of that Hyundai like it was a new Corvette. He also is a hard worker in both his job and in school (since part of school costs comes out of his pocket, he doesn't want to waste the money). I'm rightfully proud of him, but he bemoans the fact that he's a poor college student (also, OK in my book). As I tell him all the time, your payoff will come after you graduate....when he'll have a sense of pride and accomplishment on what he's achieved (mostly) on his own. Plus, his self-confidence will be well-earned. Count your good fortune that you've got a nice house to live in with a full fridge whenever you want to raid it.
I can say he's much more appreciative with what he's got by having his own skin in the game than if I just "gave it all" to him.
Give a 16 (or 17) year old a brand new Mustang? Not gonna happen in my house.
This is way off topic, but requiring your kid to help pay for college is beyond a simple lesson in responsibility. IMO
My kids (one is 16... no chance of college.. sigh) know that if they want things that have to prove themselves. However, if they are bringing home the grades, I have ZERO problem footing the whole college bill. Why? Simply because going to college is not just about getting an education, and learning what the big world around them is about, its about being 18 (or 19 or 20, etc) and they are only going to have the chance to experience it once. I dont want to stop them from enjoying those years, by making them pay for part of thier college bills. Keeping grades I think is a good enough lesson in earning things. I wont be handing them brand new $30,000 cars either, but, I have no problem buying thier first car.
I just have never been an all or nothing kind of person. I am such a LIBRA, I have to find the perfect balance between everything. Meaning, I love to find compromises.
