Even though I've seen people do 3000 or 4000 rpm neutral-drops without doing any immediate, evident damage, doing so can do terrible damage to your rear and transmission. you'll be replacing multiple types of gears if you do this. i'm not sure if you were alluding to this at all, but it's not a good idea.
The 3, 2, 1 gears arent designed to be used the same way as the shifter in the 1980s Hurst Olds Cutlass, but i'm not sure if you can use the automatic for any type of performance shifting.

I'd like to add to the others feed back. You can shift the levers manually but keep in mind, it is only designed that way for special circumstances, like trying to get out of mud or engine braking. I would never try to rev it in neutral then slap it into gear.
It shifts by itself awesomely, will go right to red line if you floor it. If you want to downshift one gear it shouldn't be too bad on it but again, if you punch it, most times it drops two gears by itself, so no real need. I will turn OD off to get it to drop into 4th when passing on the freeway, only because it sometimes wont do it on it's own unless you floor it.

The choices are there mainly to use in Mountain grades to help brake the vehicle. To use in towing, O/D off. Or in heavy snow, start in 2nd and maybe go to third. Talking about 6-8" of snow on roadway.
You would use care not to exceed the normal operating range for each gear selection.
Years ago during Dragracing if you Redlined a gear, you ran the risk of overheating the trans oil and damage would occur due to the fluid loosing ability to cool the transmission. Red the color of good oil, turns brown or even black and must be changed at once. The Mustang today has no dip stick to check the fluids color. Another reason not to play hard.
If you are using all of the Transmissions gears sensible you could play a little without doing damage. Not something to do without the real need.
For overall performance as in racing the factory settings are the safest and best. You can simply opt out of the O/D for racing, may not even matter with the 5-speed Auto.
