First time was in the back seat of a 66 mustang at a drive-in movie. Now you know why we loved those old muscle cars. The chicks dig em.

Well I can't boast the same contortionistic milestone as Glen 364 above but I remember being a 9 yr old at the 1964 NY World's Fair and seeing the new Mustang for the first time at the FORD exhibit. The new T-Birds at that time were more fascinating to me but the Mustang has been the more enduring memory since my wife and I have now owned a red 66 Sprint 6 conv for our nearly 20 years of marriage.

Being a 10-15 yr old in the mid to late 60s was ideal for car watching - I just wish I could have driven some of those beautiful Buick Wildcats and Rivierras, Grand Prix and T-Birds before the smog controls and gas crisis took the horsepower out of nice cars in the 70s.

This Mustang is definitely the coolest and most enjoyable new car I've had for decades. I hope the Retro trend continues!

Hey Michael - nice car!!!!!!!!!

We should have Hall of Fame part of this forum for post like this.

One thing way better now, at least up north is the cars last. Mustangs were often called Rustangs for good reasons. I guess that's one thing that makes them special when you see one in good shape.

I'm with you man... Born in 81 and have loved cars from the 50s & 60s ever since I could remember. Nothing could be as fun as getting my hands dirty tinkering around in my 05, something I couldn't really do until now. This is my version of the 60s stang I've always wanted. Hopefully someday I'll be able to have that 67 black & gold shelby parked next to my 05.

Born in '82, so I missed out. Wish I had been around though, it sounds like it would have been great. Thankfully, my dad got me into stangs and vettes early on, so the 05 feels nostalgiac to me.

Lived in the 50's and 60's - also some of the 40's. Loved the cars, loved the music (as they say in the movie "The Big Chill" - there ain't no other music.)
Some of the other stuff, better left behind. Found out a long time ago, that most of the stuff you worry about happening, it never does.

I missed out on a major time for automobile manufactors and enthusiast. I was born 31 years ago today. But I can live vicariously through you all!
Cars have been in my life forever, dad has been a mechanic since day one. And ive worked at Goodyear since I was 15. I do envy the older crowd.

Nice Poll.

I love to read geezer stories. I had forgotten about collecting bottles to redeem them for movie money. In the summer we sold lemonade on the street. This thread brings a smile to my old face.

I was 8 1/2 years old when Ford unveiled the new Mustang in April 1964. That running horse logo grabbed me by the throat and has never really let me go.

I still have the letter dated August 17, 1964 from W.P. Benton, Merchandising Manager for Ford Motor Company, apologizing to me that I had not received the model Ford Mustang I had requested from them, and assuring me that a model was being shipped to me immediately under separate cover. Enclosed with the letter was a business card from Lee Iacocca--then Vice President & General Manager of the Ford Division of FoMoCo. I still have the business card, and the model car, too.

I learned how to drive at age 15 in my Dad's 1965 Mustang coupe, straight 6, 3 speed manual with Ford factory air. I drove it through high school into college, had it painted, new tires, with an AM/FM cassette player in the glove box. It wasn't a show car, or a muscle car, but it was my car, until it was stolen from in front of our house in July of 1974. I carried the keys in my pocket for 5 years, figuring if I ever saw that car again I would take it home and straighten it out with the police later.

Fortunately, I never had the opportunity to "steal" my car back. I would have been in a world of trouble if I pulled a stunt like that.

Lots of great memories of my high school steady girl friend and that 1965 Mustang. It was indeed a great era to live and grow up in, through the 60s into the 70s. A much simpler time; for all our modern technology, I really do not believe that we are better off today. We all have computers on our desks at work, but instead of easing our work load, the company expects us to do 50-100 times the work, because we can, with the tools and resources at our disposal. So we end up working longer, more stressful hours.

My 1965 fastback in the garage now is like a time machine, taking me back to a simpler time whenever I slide behind the wheel and take her for a spin.

Great thread, thanks for the memories.

StangerX / Phillip: You demonstrate a wisdom beyond your years. Thanks for starting this one.

That era was far from perfect--a time of great social upheaval and unrest. But a much simpler day and time. Nowadays we all seem to be on information overload--too much coming at us too fast, too often.
