other than housing and gas whats so different?? I really dunno, i havent ever lived there before, just wondering.
Everything costs more? All the taxes? State sales tax? County sales tax? State income tax? None of that here. Housing is the biggest difference. Out there you're lucky if you can find a house for less than $500k unless it's in Watts? Half of everyone's income goes to housing/food expenses anywhere you go really.

yup, everything here costs more. especially because of taxes. our "governator" isnt doing to good at "terminating" taxes, and he's raising tuition 40% :bang:
but i guess he's doing good with the messed up Ca. budget
we'll see if hes re-elect and if "he'll be back"

i also think cars are sold at a little bit of a higher price here than anywhere else, since everyone here needs to drive. car tax is a killer

Here's my two cents on the original question: First, the V6 base model will be loads of fun and a lot cheaper for someone living at home and working an entry level job. I also think a young person is safer with the reduced power, but I know I'm opening a can of worms making those kind of assumptions. I just know at twenty I almost killed myself in a Honda Civic of all things.

I also think you should increase your down payment goal drastically. Even for the base model, I'd figure on bringing the dealership $5K.

Now me, I live in It-Really-Is-That-Expensive-So-Cal and I'm only a part-time college instructor, so how can I afford the GT? I sell all my students crack.

Okay, I'm joking about the crack.... but I can be bribed for good grades.

I hear ya man, getting out of school is exciting as heck. Don't let me rain on your parade though. I'm just saying be smart about your choices. darn I'm starting to sound like my dad! You can probably still afford a GT, just wait to see how much dough you got to sling around. I had a rude awakening when I got out of school. I took home $700 a week on Thursday, and by Sunday it was gone. Then I got kicked out of the house and the party was over. Paying rent sucks.

I always liked a teacher that improvised!

Yea i dont think my parents are going to kick me out, they pretty much assured me I have a few years. Were going in on some real estate together next year, so I know i can stay till we sell that. This will be pretty much my only expense besides my phone bill and my portion of the cable bill, so I think that $3750 a month after taxes ought to be enough for the Stang GT, god i hope so.

Take 22-25% out of the $42k to Fed taxes alone, then whatever State income tax, property tax, real estate tax, etc. Say 30% total? equals a take home of $29,400. You're probably looking at $700-900 on rent in Long Beach for a 1bdrm. 'Course there's utilities, insurance, groceries, car maintenance (gas, oil, etc), and much more to figure in to. You just need to figure out your cost of living locally and then add in the car payment. Not saying its impossible, you just need to research.

As far as salary differences, check out Cost of Living to get a feel of other cities.

I'm only 16, going on 17, and I'm planning on getting a GT. I have around 12,000 saved up right now, and I'm planning on leasing it so the payments won't be so high a month. Also, I can make payments and still have $$$, and hopefully buy the car at the end of the lease.

My dad pays for my car insurance right now (good grades ) so that's not an issue with me. Plus he'll probably put my mom down as the main driver for the Mustang.

I can't wait until September.

Well, I've worked at a gofl course for 2 1/2 years now cleaning clubs and stuff, and those rich guys are generous tippers.

I make like $5000 a summer

Plus my grandpa was always a huge Ford fan, never had another kind of car then Ford, so he bought me my Escort which right now is like a $2500 trade in value.

So im up to $12,000 woohoo!

Its been hard having to save up. but I have been for around 5 years now (even before I had a job). My plan was to get the current Mustang, but when I saw the concept 2005 I fell in love and decided to wait.

And I decided if I'm going to spend this kind of money, I'm going all out ... I'm gettign the GT with all the belsl and whistles

Of Coruse in 5 years when I have no money I bet I'll be kicking myself.

i hate to say this, but under typical circumstances, anyone making less than $50-60K would be foolish to buy the GT. you're going to have to come up with some serious compromises in your life.

News flash. $42k a year isn't a lot of money. heck I make $60k a year in NH (which would be around $80k in LA :bang, and it really isn't that much.
good point. i should have read the whole thread before i posted. i make $60K in LA and i'm still not sure if i want to spend this much on a car. by the way my current car is a 95 saturn. there's more to life than cars.

Everyone has to have something they enjoy...the whole point of money is to do something with it that you like...

I want to get a 2005 GT if I can...I have a 1997 firebird and I would be thrilled to actually drive a new car...but like a few have mentioned it will be difficult for me to do.

I want a 2005 GT...but when I consider what I'm strapping on myself my firebird seems better every day.

But I still like the idea of getting one...spending hard earned cash on a sexy car is the American Dream

im making 60 a year as well, but live in a lower cost of living area, my current vehicle (99 jeep cherokee) is paid off in July, only a few more payments. That will give me a chance to come up with the down payment by sept. I plan to just bank about 1k a month till sept to lower my monthly payment. I may even wait till early december depending on my down payment.

i've been saving as well. if everything goes right, i'll have $10K to put down by sept. borrow $20K and i'll have a sub $400 car payment which is very reasonable.
