How do I swap out the shift ****?

I don't want to mess up anything so I wanted to know the proper way of swapping out the shift ***** on the S-197 GTs.

I have heard that the **** simply unscrews, but how much torque is required to install the new **** properly? Is there a crush washer or some retention mechanism?

yes it is as simple as unscrewing the original ****, just pull the shift boot down first. they are pretty tight, but not too bad. hand tighten the new one on and your good to go

It attaches with a rubber o-ring stitched in the top of the boot.

Metroplex,
Check out my close up pic in your other thread. See the "ring" at the bottom of the shifter handle? That rubber o-ring NJ3 described slides up over the end of the handle and into that groove.

It might be just as easy to pry the boot up fro the console and look underneath to see exactly how it attaches. It's really easy to pull the boot up.

if you replace the shift **** and wnt your boot to stay up where its suppose to...

goto home depot and in the washer/bolt section (take your stock **** along) and find one washer that has close to the same sized bolt hole in the middle and the same diamater or close to it of hte bottom of the stock ****. You know, where the boot slips up over the lip to hold it up.

Also buy one more jam nut in the proper size or two depending on what kind of **** you have and how it attaches.

Push the boot down and stick the first jam nut on followed by one washer and the second jam nut, and then stick your **** on.

tighten the first jam nut up to your shift ****/ball and then move the washer up and tighten the one below it.

stretch your boot piece up over the washer and bingo.

<--- saw this post in another thread once and it was a perfect fit.

I haven't swapped the shift ***** yet (no time to really sit down and do it) and had 1 more question... How does the shift **** keep its position? Is there a locking ring or indentation that keeps it from rotating freely?
