Hello, since I've ordered my 2005 mustang and recieved my DORA, I can finally start making plans for it. Since I've never owned anything newer than a 5 year old car, what is the best way to take care of it? I'm getting leather seats, are there special ways to clean them? I'm a complete moron when it comes to car care so any help is appreciated.

 

Buy a $200 car cover, put it in the garage, lock the door and never drive in except to car shows.

I was wondering the same thing too. I'm buying a black GT, and know that I'll be a slave to the Mr. Clean No Streak Washing gun.

I don't have a garage, so i'm investing in a $200 storm car cover. It'll help with the door dings, too.

Actually, I suspend pool noodles from the garage ceiling to prevent accidental door dings between cars. Just roll them up and clip it to itself to get them out of the way when you need the garage empty.

I was just about to start a new thread on this very subject, but you beat me to it. I myself have never owned a car that I really wanted to wash. But with my new Mustang I'm gonna be actually wanting to wash it, and will be out there every weekend for a couple hours spending some quality time with my baby. I am definitely getting a car cover. You don't have to spend $200+ on one either. If you want a custom car cover, you are probably gonna have to wait a few months after the '05 Mustangs come out anyway to get one, once companies start making them to fit. You can get a car cover sized for your car for like $75 that will be a close enough fit. I am seriously thinking about building a garage/shed right off my house though. I have a few months to build it. But, as far as cleaners, has anyone used that new Mr/ Clean no-dry autowash yet? It looks like it'll work good. I'll probably get that, and then some Meguire's polish, some good tire and wheel cleaners, as well as stuff for the interior.

Glad you started this thread, I have been wanting to ask a car care question.

How do you care for a rag top?

This will be my first one and I have NO experience with a convertible.

 

I am NOT a Jeff Gordon Fan but I will tell you Dupont Teflon Spray Wax is really good stuff. I like to keep a good wax job on my car and this stuff is really puts a killer shine on it and makes it feel smooth as glass.

Meguires leather cleaner is also really good for the interior.

 

You wash it like any other car (with it closed). If you want to clean the ragtop put soap on a cloth and rub. That's pretty much it.

 

Don't forget the engine... follow the regular maintenance schedule, use synthetic in the engine oil, tranny fluid, rearend, etc.

 

Currently I wax my 97GT monthly, I want to keep it clean. Also this helps keep scratches and swirl marks to a minimum. For the guys buying black or dark colours, such as sonic Blue, 3m makes a glaze that is grey, specific for dark colours. Does a great job hiding swirls (spider web effects) before you wax.

Some people may laugh that I wax it that often, but it only takes me 10 minutes to wash it so it is spotless. I never have to spend tons of time cleaning the rims, trim, etc...

Yeah...it's called Quik Detailer, and it works really great.
