Every who hangs here knows that Shinoda owns the 'BOSS' name. But how did they get to own it? Did they do the original Bosses in the late 60s early 70s? If not, did they purchase the Boss name from Ford? What's up with that?

Because the Mach 1 has been done, I'd like to see the first SE from Ford be a Boss, but reading the threads, it does not sound like this can happen.

If all else fails... I say Ford uses the name HOSS... as in 'HOSS 281'? (High Output Standard Shift... NO automatics allowed, hehe)

And of course it would be available in Grabber Orange (spelled Valencia)... just my .02 cents.

 

Larry Shinoda, the creator of the original Bossse (as well as Mach 1s and Camaro Z28s) founded Team Shinoda in the early to mid-1990s.

I think this is complete misinformation. Ford still has the rights to use the Boss name, and Team Shinoda uses the "Boss Shinoda" name.

If ford wants to put out another "Boss" there is no legal ramifications.

I'm no lawyer, but the way I understand trademark law is that you must re-new every 10 years and you also MUST have an "intent to use" that trademark. Since Ford has not sold a Boss in 30 years, I would say they no longer have rights to it. Notice how Ford brought out a Mustang Cobra every 10 years

A name can remain dormant for a long time and a company still own the rights. A good example is the Cyclone name and Mercury. Anyone here ever wonder why GMC had to spell the name of their turbo S15 the wrong way...Syclone.... instead of Cyclone? Yep, that's right...cause Mercury still owned Cyclone even if it hadn't been on a car in twenty years.

The "new" GT isn't called GT40 because the GT40 had an overall height of exactly 40 inches. The GT is longer, wider and taller and thus doesn't wear the name "GT40" but just "GT".

In the case of the Ford GT, another company owned the naming rights, and ford wasn't willing to pay the millions these people were asking for the rights.

 

Yeah, they tried to stick Ford with a dollar ammount that was just too obscene and ford basically told them 'uh, no...thank you bubbye'

People will probably start calling it the GT44 nickname anyway.
From what I remember the original GT40 was also called the FORD GT but gained the name from the height (as we all know)

 

Shelby Roadster is right about that. They were even offered a Ford GT as partial payment and they didn't take the offer.
