Thumbs down

At around 110 MPH and up, my hood starts to shake. Yes, it's fully secured. Does anyone know if this is normal? Has anyone else experienced it? It was moving enough to scare me a bit.

Haven't the stang up to that speed yet, but I have seen it on other cars. 110 mph winds are pretty strong, you should of seen one of the hurricanes we had.

Ah, so it has been happening to other cars. Is it something I should be worried about? Should I take it to the dealer? I don't want to take this car to the track and have the hood fly off as I shift from 3rd to 4th!

LOL dustin.... but if anyone out there is experiencing the same thing, I'd really like to know if this is a legitimate safety issue or if it's nothing to worry about. If it's a problem, I'm going to the dealer pronto.

I dont remember who but someone else on here was having the same problem when they were in a street race. So i think everyone will have it i dont think your car is at all faulty, i dont know maybe try some hood pins or something i know that ford had to put them on there cup cars, and even one pair wasnt enough so they had to put a total of 4 on. So i guess just the design of the car ??? i dont know

My first one did the same thing but it was more like 90 and it was not the wheels. That was the very first thing I checked.
Tony did your hood shake when you was ROLLIN ON at 140? How about yours John? Did it shake too?

There was a previous thread on this, but I can't find it just now. As I recall, there was speculation that an excessive amount of air was being trapped under the hood (lifting it at high speeds) due to inadequate space for air to exit the engine compartment. Not sure what the technical term for this is, but that was the jist of it.

I'm sure Ford must know about it by now. Perhaps there will be a TSB coming to increase the cowl ventilation? I really don't want to have to add racing pins to my hood (I'm going for the sleeper look).

I don't know but since I had the supercharger and to NOS modded on, at about 250 mph the paint freaking pealed off. I couldn't believe it! Haha.

Totally kidding on that one.

But I haven't had my car any further than 100mph and I haven't had that problem yet.

Your hood bumpers need to be adjusted. Make sure the two center bumpers are NOT touching the hood when it is closed. Those two bumpers are only for overslam. Now adjust the two outer bumpers to pre-load the hood. Make sure that your hood outer edges are still flush with the fenders. The aluminum hood is designed with an overcrown in it. The two outer bumpers push up against the overcrown and preload the hood. This will keep it from deflecting at speed. Typically, when you have hood flutter it is b/c the inner bumpers are set too high and the outer bumpers are not preloading the hood properly.

You guys are funny!

Yes the hood will shake and shimmy at high speeds, usually not that much, but how much shimmy you get going on is directly related to the wind conditions at the time.

Last weekend I went on an excursion up to 145 m.p.h. no shimmy, no shake.

A half hour later I was passing an Escalade and got up to about 130 m.p.h and I thought the hood was going to fall off!

The difference? When I was passing the Escalade it was on a 2 lane road, once I got back into my lane, on coming tractor trailer traffic created some hefty turbulance and made my hood do the mambo!

Once I backed off to about 110 m.p.h the dancing came under control.

What's amazing is once stopped if I try to move any corner of the hood, I can't! So that's some serious lift going on.

I'm sure a spoiler in the front might alleviate some of this by directing air around the front end instead of up and inside the engine compartment.

An air extracting hood would diminish this as well.

Hood pins or a vented hood might be the solution.

Bad aerodynamics, that's why you don't see cars with forward slanted grills anymore, the thing must catch the air like a barn door.

I had the same problem. Took it to dealer and he adjusted the 2 screws in the front right under the hood. I had the problem goig 70-80 MPH. Its something you could fix on your own actually. Tip: as the hood is closed, pull it up from the front edge on the left. If it seems loose thats the side that needs to be adjusted. If not, do the same on the right.

Good luck with it.

Same hood dance here. After about 125mph, and like 66 said cross wind's, or turbulence from on-comeing traffic made it worse. I Pined it at any rate. I'll try adjusting the bumper's, and see if that help's. One thing about it, if you saw some "Hoodless" GT's runing around you could easily pick out the speed demon's!
