help with shifter on automatic Transmission

My daughter just bought a 2005 Mustang V6. We took it for a test drive and everything worked fine but when she got it home, the button on the automatic transmission shifter would not pop out and we could not get the keys out of the ignition. This was a bit scary because we could shift between all the gear and none of the stops worked.

I removed the shifter **** and there was a black plunger type assembly with a triangular edge. I was able to push that in and the the shifter worked properly. I then installed the handle back on and it worked for about 5 minute but then i had the same problem. After removing the shift handle a second time, the black plunger now comes completely out of its socket and no longer stays in.

The plunger has two small tabs on opposite sides. it seems like you need o push it all the way in at a 90 degree angle and then twist it to make it stay in place but it doesn't seem to be working. does anybody have any ideas?

Find a replacement shifter at your local junkyard or fleebay. I am pretty sure Ford does not sell parts for the shifter only the whole assembly

Thanks, I think that is what I'm going to do. New ones are so expensive. If it weren't for the fact the key won't come out of the ignition, i would leave it as is. It's kind of nice being able to shift without pushing the button, but a little scary also, when going into neutral you could accidentally bypass it and wind up in Drive or Reverse depending which way you were sifting.

I have the whole assembly for sale if you are interested.

Also try removing the section on the right of the shifter.. It cones out and push down on the white tab.
Every yime my shifter got stuck like that i poped out the cover and pushed the white tab in and was able to put it in park.

Hope that helps.
