Help to diagnose a clicking
Help to diagnose a clicking
When braking I randomly hear a loud clicking noise. It does not happen all the time but it is very loud. I am able to recreate the noise by shifting the driveshaft back and forth by hand. The noise comes from the rear end of the transmission where the driveshaft enters. Any help on what I should specifically replace or do?

Without actually looking at your car, there's really no way of knowing for certain what exactly could be causing your clicking noises. My suggestion would be taking your car to a auto repair shop and have them thoroughly look your car over.. Meanwhile, welcome aboard.
Or there is a carrier bearing on the 2 piece drive shafts on some stock Mustangs? Not sure what models had the 2 piece, I haven't even crawled that far under mine to see what I have yet. Might have just been on the V6 models, not sure....where is Houtex when you need his vast array of semi useless knowledge? LOL
it happens sometimes when hitting the brakes. It has gotten worse over time. I don’t have to go to reverse to make it happen but it will do it in reverse sometimes when I hit the brakes when moving the car in any direction. The noise is not the u joint. The clunk noise comes from inside somewhere in rear side of the transmission pan area. When jacked up, the car will make the noise anytime I try to rotate the back tire back and forth. I gab the rear wheel by the rim and try to rotate the wheel either way and the clunk happens from the spot described. The noise is not at the u joint. The u joint looks to be in good condition

To answer the question, all Mustangs from 2005 and up have the two piece with the carrier bearing from the factory. Even the IRS ones from 2015 and on, for whatever reason. Guessin' NVH or somethin'.
Seems odd they'd still use the two piece when the pumpkin back there doesn't bounce around... Although it's interesting they appear to have swapped out the CV in the middle for a U-joint...

I'm sorry to say that's the deal. But that's the deal. I'd highly suggest as other(s) have: get that thing to a mechanic, specifically one that can deal with a transmission. Or buy another and swap it in, might be cheaper/easier to do that yourself if you're in a pinch. Then you can tear this one apart and figure out if it's salvageable and rebuild it for putting back in the car, or sellin' it local/ebay/amazon/? because profit or at least break even...

Probably not what you wanted to hear. But I hope it helps anyway. Good luck! And welcome to the forums!
