Have Mustang Sales Tanked?

I live in Long Island, New York and 9 months ago when I went to order my
2006 GT local dealers were getting $1000 over MSRP for GT's. I thus boought mine out of state and saved about $2,500. Today, while I was
going through the newspaper, four local dealers were advertising new
2006 GT's for $2,000+ off MSRP and saying they had a dozen or more in
stock. One local dealer has 30 GT's, which by my calculation is about 6-7
months of allocation for that dealer. In checking on-line all of the local
dealers have an abundance of GT's in addition to the glut of V-6's that
have been around for most of the 2006 MY. Is this a local New York thing
or does it show a drastic falloff in Mustang sales nationwide that will only
come to light when inventories balloon to unmanagable levels and orders
stop going to Ford?

I would say sales have cooled off but I think "tanked" is too strong at this point.

In your area, that might be the case. In other areas, I don't think this is so. Overall production numbers might be down, but I suspect that is more of a function of improved demand planning or reducing overtime at the plant.

More of the Mustang focus now is on the GT500. That will revive interest of the general population.

I think that what we are seeing on the lots now is normal. What we experienced for the last couple of years is a demand for a new product that out stripped the supply chain. In the Raleigh NC area you can now pick up any Mustang for MSRP - $3000 with no negotiation. Some dealers were asking MSRP + $7000 at the end of MY 05.

One of my local dealers has a nice selection of Roush and GT models. It's actually not a bad thing to have a few on the lot to choose from. I'm sure sales though have cooled off a little because of higher gas prices. I know I don't have as much disposable income anymore.

I think both you and MY05GT pretty much nailed it IMO. The end of the "gotta have it" frenzy and higher gas prices have have combined to cause a drop in sales.

I live in CT and you come across GT's on lots sometimes but not often at all. If you do find one 9 out of 10 times it an auto. I've pretty much traveled the state lookimg for a good deal before I ordered my 07 GT a few months ago and the most I can get them to take off is about a grand. They're scarce here big time. I've actually only seen a couple driving around. Not sure if it's a CT thing or what but if you want a Mustang here your going to have to order it.

You might want to look out of state and have them flat bed it to you since you're only getting $1000 off.

Not many GTs on lots around DFW Texas, and the ones that are are nearly all automatics. They seem to be selling briskly enough here still

Same here in Western PA. If you want a GT with a manual tranny you're gonna have to either order it or get on one fast when it comes in.

If I tried to get any dealer here to knock 2-3 thousand off they would laugh at me......and they have......I've tried it multiple times. When a GT 5 speed ends up at a dealer here you have to jump on it and the dealers know this so there not going to take thousands off. These cars sell!!!!

I'm also in CT and not happy with the selection. I went and talked to one dealer about ordering an 07 and he said it would be exactly the MSRP from the Ford website.

What area are you in on L.I.? I have friends all over the island so I may have to take a trip down if it will save me that much. Particular dealer names would be helpful as well.

Yeah I notice most of the lots are auto's as well. Maybe Ford needs to rethink manual to auto ratios.

Hey, where in LI are you? You should come out to the Kmart show on Tues. night on Hempstead Tpk. There are alot of stangs that meet up there. I think the problem with the overstocks here on LI is that so many dealers were markign them up that people just didn't buy them and now they have to clear room for the 07's.One of the reasons I got my V6 is because no way was I going to pay a 5 grand markup on a GT when I could get a sixer from the same dealer @ xplan.

Our tiny little local dealer has a whole row of GTs and only two V6s. Nearly every GT is either Torch Red or black. Nice colors, but no variety.

Yeah, that seems to make sense. Here in Vancouver/Victoria, there are plenty of GTs and V6s on lots - and they don't seem to be moving very fast.

Here's a spreadsheet that shows sales for 2006, 2005, and 2004 by month. Sales are down 21% for May this year, compared to May last year.

From 1 Jan to 31 May 05, 81,541 mustangs were sold
From 1 Jan to 31 May 06, 72,099 mustangs were sold

Or so far, 12% lower for this year compared to last.

It may be down compared to last year but remember last year was a VERY HOT year for the Mustang.

I would say that sales are probably running close to what Ford thought it would be to begin with.

Here in Richmond there are is a good choice of Mustangs on the lots but the Dealers are not coming off the MSRP very much from what I have heard.
