had the underside of my hood painted .. PICS
this is one of the best things I've done recently ... I thought it looked sickly before ... when the car was Eleanorized (thats right .. Eleanorized) the underside of the hood was left an ugly chalky looking matte orange that looked like *** .. I don't think I have any pics of the before but I had it painted a matte black and I think it looks 1,000 times better now

better hope your engine doesn't catch fire....

Dude that is the oldest bs story in the automotive world. Has nothing to do with putting out a fire, it actually burns extremely easilly. It is, and has always been, to protect the hood paint and quiet exterior engine noises.

Yeah, I catually had a salesperson try and tell me the plastic buttons were supposed to melt and drop the "fire blanket" onto the engine, smothering the fire!
Never mind the enourmous amount of air a fire could draw from beneath the car.
I found myself unable to call back that salesperson or dealership. This was an older fella too; so either he was a very slow learner, or took me to be one.

Sorry to sound cynical, but just my 2 cents. You have got to know that the underhood blanket is necessary, otherwise Ford would have removed them in a minute, to save money.
And yes, Derek, your hood does look nice. And, not having the blanket is probably not going to cause any major problems.
